Consistently Setting Up Any Golf Shot

There is a correct method to sed up any golf shot. Regardless of your thoughts, a step by step method creates the greatest opportunity to hit consistent golf shots. As I thought about my process, I realized that most wayward shots occur because I truncated or missed a step in my setup. I realize this seems a bit crazy, but my poor efforts are mental not physical. Therefore, if you want to hit consistent shots, following a proven setup routine is key. And you are lucky today because I found the one I use explained by a very popular instructor.

Rick Shiels outlines exactly the process I like to use when I am playing golf. During competitions, I am very meticulous about each step as I add a few more that I will discuss after the video.

Shiels talks about placing the clubface first and building your setup around this one movement. I completely agree with his assessment and recommend all beginner golfers to establish this one movement into their game as quickly as possible. It is a foundational step towards a successful golf game.

I also alike his hack on establishing the proper distance from the ball before making contact. I have not tried that in the past, but will use it when I am back golfing in a few weeks. I love these easy, simple and repeatable hacks to establish proper technique when golfing. This is definitely one of those.

The one point I would add to this set up routine is to establish a small target (aim small miss small) in the distance and another inline with this target just a few feet in front of your ball. This will set the proper conditions to align your clubface before starting the process outlined by Shiels. Selecting the proper aimpoint is very important and establishes a benchmark for the result of your swing. Other than creating an aimpoint off in the distance, I follow the steps outlined by Shiels. It works for my game and is something that I will use for the rest of my career.

On a side note, I want to reinforce Shiels point about players setting their feet first before anything else. This is a complete no-no for playing great golf. If you watched the your friends, many amateurs will set their feet first. If you watch any videos from the US Open, all the professionals set their clubface first. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that setting the clubface first is the proper way to establish consistent golf shots.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Yeah, I don’t know how anyone can aim themselves well without aiming the face first.

I go one step farther. I stand behind the ball and choose my line first. Once I have that I choose a point on the ground on that line that’s close to my ball to aim my clubface at. After that I can step to the ball and take my stance and hit with confidence even into a blindingly bright setting sun.

It’s a great way to work. When the sun isn’t in your face, you have two points to aim down making it easier to feel confident about your aim. And like I said, when you can’t see anything down range when over the ball, you still know you’re aimed correctly.
