Osprey Links 3 Man Scramble – Results

As you will remember, Geary, Blair and I entered a 3 man scramble last Sunday at Osprey Links Golf Course. Jeff Rogerson, the club pro and general manager, organized a great event with the support of his awesome team. To top off the great golf, Jeff’s team provided a fantastic roast beef meal with all the fixings. It was a perfect way to end our time on the links.

Geary, Blair and I had never played together as a group, yet our individual strengths made us a good team on paper. So we embarked on a journey into the unknown, fun and excitement. The rules were fairly straight forward and not uncommon for a scramble tournament. We all arrived early, entered the skins competition, and prepared for a fun round on the links. There was 38 teams in this event with two teams starting off each hole and one par 5 had four teams. The day remained overcast with little wind and no rain.

Rules of Golf Simplified

The new rules of golf are out for your reading pleasure. They cover all the important points that golfers should know and understand. For some, this book is an exciting must read; for others, well lets just say that it is a good book to sleep by.

Periodically, I will attempt to demystify some of golf’s rules to save you the time you would spend reading the book. For now, I am going to start out with an easy, but misunderstood rule about the tee box.

Rule 11: Tee Shots

There are other aspects of Rule 11 you might need to read if you are entering a tournament, but for now you have the abridged version.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line. In the meantime, enjoy my latest infographic on the 11th rule.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

Where Do You Get Your Golf Advice?

The amount of information about golf is amazing. I think we need to have the skills of an information officer to effectively sift through the reams of data. During our searches, we stumble across sources that we feel we can trust and use them in future searches.

I had recent discussion with Tony Dear, shortgameking1, and Kelly Crumpler USGTF about sources and the value they bring during the selection of new equipment. We went through an entire gambit of thoughts that led me to think that there is a more powerful influence in the golfing world than the constant barrage of media ads. Continue reading →

Golf is a Game of Inches

I enjoy watching Dustin Johnson, Jason Day or Jordan Spieth crush the ball off the tee. Something about seeing a tiny white sphere rocket through the air with bullet like speed is mind-boggling. Yet, as we revel over the distances many professional and amateurs have gained over the past 20 years, golf remains a game of inches!

Regardless of where a player is on the course, an inch in any direction can turn a poor shot into an awesome one. Receiving a ‘member’s bounce’ or feeling utterly disappointed boils down to inches. The real challenge for most players is to understand how to maximize these inches and still crush the ball 300 yards! Continue reading →

Golfing in a 3 Man Scramble

Tomorrow I will be playing in a 3 man scramble at my home course of Osprey Links Golf Course. It is going to be very interesting because I have played in other events with Blair, but never with Geary. It will be fun to see how we play together because we all have different philosophies on how to play golf.

I am not suggesting that either is right or wrong, however I think we will have to modify our approaches to make sure we shoot our lowest possible score. I think to have a chance at winning, we will have to shoot a 9 under par 62. This score is easily attainable with 4 par 5s, 9 par 4s and 5 par 3s. All the par 5s are reachable and many of the par 4s are under 400 yards. Overall, Osprey Links is a great scoring course for a scramble tournament. Continue reading →
