I have played at many courses over my career and I am never shy to express what I like and do not like. It is not that I am picky, but I understand the value of playing a great course that has all the facilities needed to round out my experience. If I cannot have it all (practice facility), then at least there is a bare minimum I want / need to ensure I am prepared to play my rounds.

The Value of a Golf Membership at Your Local Course
For years I believed that the value of a golf membership was based solely on the number of rounds you plan to play each year. I calculated the price per round value to determine if a membership was warranted. I explained this simple math problem to many would-be membership buyers and thought I was doing everyone a good service. Well, after talking to Jeff Rogerson, GM and Managing Director, at my home course of Osprey Links Golf Course, I realize that I have been offering poor advice and today I hope to correct that error.

Have you ever been playing a round of golf and nothing is going wrong? I mean when you happen to hit an errant shot, it hits a tree or rake and lands in perfect position. I have experienced several rounds like these, but not many of the years. When they do occur, golf is so much fun that I cannot wait to play another 18 holes of golf. While these rounds are few and far between, I have played many rounds where my game was on fire and I was not able to handle the extra pressure of success.

After long since promising, I have put together an article on how I built a chipping mat for less than $50. My mat is designed for short chipping practice in a relatively confined space. Since constructing my training aid in February, I have used it almost everyday for no less than 15 minutes. Additionally, my wife has made a habit of chipping everyday as she is planning to start playing golf again this year. This consistent effort to chip often is really starting to pay off dividends, but first how to build your own DIY chipping mat.
