When I was watching The Players Championship on the weekend, congrats to Justin Thomas on the win, I was impressed by the stellar play. Conversely, I watched some challenging shots that I thought could have been avoided. Regardless of what I think, the roller coaster round is a natural thing for most golfers as we accept wayward shots as part of the game. Yet, I was a bit concerned by one of the announcers who stated that one of the players just committed and unforced error!

Getting Ready For Golf Season
It is about that time of year when my golf juices really get flowing. We just had two days of double digit highs and the snow has receded by at least half. This generally means that it is time for me to start looking at the season ahead. But hold on a moment, it is still at least 4 to 5 weeks before golf courses in my area will be open for business. This timeline leads me to wonder what I should do that will slowly prepare me for my first hit of the season!

I debated about writing this article because it is so subjective that I was not sure I had a defined point of view. As I plunk away at the keyboard, I muse about if dropping in the world ranking is really a valuable subject or not. After some deliberation, I decided to give this topic a try and see where we end up. If you are wondering what sparked my sudden interest in golf’s world ranking (which I normally do not focus too much attention on), well I read that Phil Mickelson dropped to 101 and Rory McIlroy dropped to 11 in the world rankings. After watching “Trouble With The Curve” with Clint Eastwood, I was reminded of two important traits that can be transferred between sports. In this case it is baseball and golf. During the movie an aging baseball scout, who is visually impaired, is sent to assess a potential number one pick in the upcoming draft. As most armchair athletes know, this is a big deal and as such, mistakes cannot be made. As the movie unfolds, Eastwood finally offers some sage wisdom that is transferable to golf. Additionally, in the final scenes, a surprise character sums up an perfect approach to all sports. **Spoiler Alert: If you have not watched this movie and want too; I suggest you stop reading because there is some spoiler discussion below**

Making a decision about your golf game is never easy. No matter what you decide, it inevitably generates joy, frustration, consternation, frustration (oh yeah mentioned that one already) and success. It is a process that is unique to the player which no one can change. However, I want to pose a hypothetical (or maybe more real that we think) situation regarding any decision. I my view, making a decision comes in two categories: forced or intentional. The more I think about any changes I made to my golf game, the movement to a different path fell into one of those two categories.
