There are golfers that play golf, play golf, and play golf. You can not hear the inflection in my voice as you read the first line, but if you think about it……there are three different state of golfer. Every athlete has an inner athlete trying to work its way to the surface. Sometimes the journey is a challenging and other times it is a natural progression. Well, golfers are exactly the same. The challenge I have found during my journey was determining the type of player that best suit my mental and physical capabilities. Finding my inner golfer was a journey, but I think I have a handle on it now.

The Thrill Is Back! Playing Golf With Hickory Shafts
For the second year in a row, I was invited to play a round of golf by Bill Vossen. This invite was nothing out of the ordinary except our round was to be played with a set of hickory shaft clubs! The Golf Historical Society of Canada was hosting a few members at Osprey Links Golf Course to expose modern day players to a round of golf using equipment technology from the late 1800s and early 1900s. I have to say it that even though it was my second time using these amazing clubs, I found that the experience invigorated my golf game.

From the title of the article, I guess you figured out that I won my match yesterday. After playing 18 holes with hickory sticks, I played another 18 holes against Scott. Steve and Dan, Scott’s friends (and now my friends) joined us to round out our group. These young players have strong developing games in addition to being great company during our round. There were some great shots, some not so great shots, and some forgettable shots. However, the company was fantastic, the weather was gorgeous and the course was in fantastic condition. Overall, it was a great round and I had a great time.

How often do you go to the range to practice your game? When you do, have you given much thought as to how or what you are going to practice when you get there? Many players, including myself in the past, would buy a large bucket, whack them without much thought, then spend a couple of minutes chipping and putting. I realized many years ago that going to the range must be more than just hitting golf balls. I have talked about using your range time effectively in the past, but I think I need to up my game a bit more to really achieve something that will help my game.
