Have you ever thought that you are focusing on the wrong aspect of your golf game? I sure have over the years and to my demise. Yup, every player has on occasion travelled down the wrong path searching for the magic to lower our golf scores. I have found something that worked very well for me and has served my golfing needs for a long time. It deals less a particular stroke or technique, but a philosophy of lowering my golf scores in a consistent manner. I have mentioned it before, but I figure it is worth talking about because it will work for every player.

Not Following Through With Your Golf Resolution
I purposely wait for some time before talking about our 2023 golf resolutions. The reason for my delay is to give everyone a chance to re-evaluate their golf resolutions because if they are like all my resolutions in the past, they are broken by now. 🙂 I do not make resolutions because I believe that taking steps to improve my daily life and golf game is a year long process that requires constant attention. Maybe attention is the wrong word and focus or intent. Making a statement of finality that requires immediate action seems like a great idea, but I have rarely been successful making resolutions; golf or otherwise. To take this one step further, I do not make golf resolutions, I make golf plans and try execute it as best possible.

Golf is a tough game! Anyone who has devoted any amount of time to playing this awesomely frustrating sport knows that at any time great or disastrous things can happen. It is because we have any control over some events even though we think the opposite. I cannot remember the number of times that my round has change significantly (good or poor) for the swing of one club. The mental challenges to the unknown results does force many players into a tailspin. But not me, I have decided (actually years ago) not to focus on the short game, but to say focused on the long term results of improving my game.

Considering my blog is title “The Grateful Golfer” one would think that I am a happy golfer every time I hit the links. This mental attitude is definitely at the forefront of my mind on the first tee. Unfortunately, like all golfers, when I am struggling with my game, remaining grateful can be a challenge. I start to have second thoughts about my game, my approach, and my reason for being there: does this sound familiar? Of course it is not earth shattering and I quickly forget my woes at the sound of my driver hitting the ball for the first stroke of my round. At that time, all the amazing reasons why I love playing golf come rushing back into my mind. I am in my happy place and life definitely takes on a new persona as I do become a grateful golfer!
