Yesterday, I played in the second leg of the Senior Men’s Ryder Cup event in our region. Our second match was played at the fantastic course of Timberwolf Golf and Country Club. I have played this track a few times in the past and after yesterday’s round, I can say that I am never disappointed. It is the perfect mix of challenging tee shots, well place hazards, and undulating greens that make me think. My partner, Wes, and I played against a tough team from Timberwolf who played steady and unwavering golf. As they continued to rack up the Aggregate Match Play points, it was apparent to Wes and I that we had our hands full. However, never to backdown for a challenge, we teed it up with the expectation to making a game of it.

I am fortunate to represent Osprey Links Golf Course on the Senior Men’s Ryder Cup team. This team will compete against four other teams in the region with a chance to play at the provincial championship in August. The interesting aspect of this competition is that I will play on three different courses in the span of five weeks. The change in venues will challenge my ability to adjust to the speed of the greens at each club to ensure I help my team gain the much needed points. Fortunately, I found a simple drill by Paula Creamer that builds on my putting foundation that is easily transportable to any golf course. I can say that it works very well and I plan to use it today when I play in the second leg of our competition.

Have you ever taken the time to watch the golf swing of the various players? With so much attention paid to Bryson DeChambeau’s efforts to crush the ball, other long hitters (Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas) are over looked. If you take a look at my list of big hitters, you will notice that they are as physically diverse as are their swings. It really does not seem to matter if the player is large, slender, muscular, or extremely fit, their swings work for their them and produce amazing results.

Watching the action at Torrey Pines, I am continually struck by the importance of putting from the proper position. I watched many players lip out because they were in the wrong position caused by being on the wrong side of the hole. I realized that many approach shots were made with medium irons and that makes a difficult task for any golfer and Torrey Pines just makes it more challenging. But enough of the difficult conditions at the US Open, the lessons I learned from watching golf this weekend is hitting my approach shot the proper side of the hole is as critical for shooting low scores.
Continue readingis The US Open The Toughest Major or Not?
I am watching the first round of the US Open as I write this article and I wonder if the US Open is the toughest Major or not? I think this is a legit question considering that some conditions and courses of The Open might rival the fast greens and deep rough at Torrey Pines this weekend. Of course it would be very difficult make an in-depth comparison, but if they could I would suggest that the US Open would win out as the overall toughest Major in professional golf.
