Even a Tortoise Wins A Race

We all know the story of the Tortoise and the Hare! If not, it is one of Aesop’s Fables and you can read about it here. I think about this story often when I peruse the golf news and see the hundreds (maybe millions) of guarantee fixes that will lower my golf score.

I read some of the claims, but can honestly say that I most do not even catch my attention. However, before you think today’s article will be a rant, it is not. I actually believe that everyday I am panning for that one nugget that will actually help my game. And the quick fix claims are a great resource. Continue reading

Videotaping My Golf Swing

Over the years, I have video taped my golf swing. Surprisingly, I never watched it to analyse my technique. I have looked close, but I think it is a beautiful thing and does not need fixing…..haha. I have come to realize that I do cast a bit around chest area and as a result I loose some distance. Kevin, an avid reader of The Grateful Golfer, has pointed this out on several occasions. I appreciate his feedback and will use his advice as a starting point next spring. However, I was wondering if you have ever videotaped your swing. Continue reading

Fixing My Golf Swing Through Video

While practicing at the range I decided to video some shots with my pitching wedge. The reason was to see if I notice anything out of the ordinary because lately I was not hitting my PW crisp or solid. If I miss hit my PW, it was usually a thin shot. It was a bit frustrating because my PW is one of the best clubs in my bag.

As I watched this video (I realize I was hitting a bit quick) I noticed that when I was hitting the ball thin, my right knee was locked straight. I watched this video over and over to make sure and I was right.

So, I made an adjustment on the range and now hit my PW like the old me. This is an important club for me because my lay up distance is 115 yards – a full and controlled PW!

I find that using video to periodically check my swing really helps identify potential problems. How about you?

Do you use video to help with your golf swing? If so, what did you find out?

How Wide is Your Golf Stance?

Last fall, I was fortunate to take part in a golf clinic given by PGA Tour Canada for serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces. During my time on the range, several Pros commented on how narrow my stance was and how I was losing power and distance because I had very little body movement.

Take a look at my stance before the lesson.

Now take a look at my stance at the beginning of the year. I slowed this video down by 2x.

Do you see any difference? It may not look like much of a change, but the lower video has my stance widened by about 6 inches! That is very dramatic and I am still getting used to the difference. Interestingly, I am hitting the ball a bit further, however my accuracy is not quite at its normal level. It is still very early in the season and I only have 8 games under my belt since I started golfing on the first of May.

My new stance looks and feels better. My balance is more consistent through the entire swing. However, always the analyst, I slowed everything down to take a look at my whole swing mechanics. For the most part I was fairly happy and I cannot really complain since it is so early in the season. But….I guess there is always a but…. there are two things I did notice that I need to fix.

First, my left arm bends too much as I draw the club back. Just above waist height, my arm starts to bend. This is not good! There are two reasons for this (in my mind) flexibility and the second error I noticed. My transition at the top of the swing is too quick. I need to slow down the movement of bringing the club back to bringing it forward. If I can manage to conquer these two things in the next month or so, my GAF (golf attitude factor) will only improve.

What do you think of my analysis of my swing? I really what to know what you think!
