Every golfer can recognize a player with great touch around the green. Their ball always finishes within a reasonable distance for an easy putt. As they watch the ball roll out, they assume that the results of where the ball finishes is the key to great touch around the green. Unfortunately, they are looking at the end result and not the real cause of great touch. Stop Helping Your Chip, It Is Hurting Your Score
Chipping is a fundamental skill that all golfers must master. It is one what requires patience, imagination and confidence in order to develop the chipping stroke needed to lower your golf score. All to often, amateurs, like myself, forget to trust in our technique and try to help our chip get just a bit closer to the hole. Unfortunately, the only thing that happens is we stub or blade our chip resulting in grind to make par or bogey. Helping any golf shot usually results in poor execution, but when chipping it seems to create worse results.

I was playing golf two days ago and on the last hole I hit a wayward shot to the right of the ninth green. I pushed my pitching wedge from 120 yards and found a tough third shot on the par 4. I have had a great deal of experience hitting shots from tough locations and I used this experience to hopefully save par. Fortunately, I have a simple three step process for difficult shots and it paid of in this case.

The flight to roll ratio when chipping was kind of an innate process for me, but after watching Kevin Haime – Flagstick Golf Magazine May 2015 – I think I need to put a few more brain bits into this topic. This is not a difficult process and there are many different factors to consider, however the flight to roll ration suddenly makes sense.

The title of this article might be a little misleading. The reason I used the word something is because many amateurs experience a tightening of their golf swing if anything is in their line of sight to the pin. The tips in this article where designed to deal with hitting over a bunker, however I would suggest that the skill of chipping with confidence is not limited to dealing with hazards. If we master the tips presented by Rick Fowler and Butch Harmon in the video below, then our golf game and golf score will improve dramatically.
