Most amateurs are thrilled to play par 3s because they can reach the green in one…..most of the time. If this is the case, why is the scoring average over par? Is it that we miss hit their irons or select the wrong club for distance? Maybe we miss calculate the distance required to carry on to the green? Or maybe we are overconfident and to not meet our expectations. Regardless, I found a way to improve my scores on par three’s and all approach shots if required.

Par 3 Challenges Fixed With One Thought
Every golf course has holes that are easy and others that challenge even the best golf game. Playing many rounds of golf over the years, par 3s have always been a bug bear to my game. If I birdie one or two per round, then I knew great things were going to happen. My goal is to shot par at worst, but that did not always work out. As time progressed, I realized my strategy on par 3s needed to change and surprisingly, it worked!

Every round of golf has the potential to result in a fantastic score. Regardless of the course, every player can visualize shooting a score they can be proud of while kibitzing at the 19th hole. It is a matter of developing a strategy, focusing on each swing, reacting the results and remaining positive when the round falls off the rails. This process is normal, universal, and subject to failure when we start poking holes in our agreed upon strategy. Everything is going great until a fatal shot and then we re-strategize and throw everything out the window. Truly a recipe for disaster!

If you are a golfer, you try you best each round to lower your golf score. I do not know any player who spends 4 hours on the links who wishes they shoot a higher score. I know I am always hopeful that my game will click resulting in my lowest score ever. The challenge most golfers face is pressing their game at the wrong time in the fight to play better golf. Sometimes a bogey is the smart score to prevent higher numbers when navigating the course. Decisions that drive our course management strategy are at the heart of the fight for lower golf scores.

This is the goal of every round of golf – shooting my lowest score. It is a challenge some days because many of us change our focus when we start to realize that our lowest score is within our grasp. For some reason we change our thoughts and thus our game changes. For me, I try to focus on one thing – course management to stay within the zone. It seems, however, that I am in the minority.
