Power or Finesse in Golf

Finesse

I was watching two volleyball games at the local college. The Canadore Panthers, men and women, played against Le Cité college for a regularly scheduled match. The women hit the floor first and then the men. As I watched these young athletes play, I could not help but notice the similarities between of the volleyball matches and golf.

As you can imagine, the women’s match was mostly finesse with some power and the men’s match was mostly power with a bit of finesse. Without dissecting all the possible finer points, I would suggest that the LPGA and the PGA Tours follow the same style of play. Continue reading

The Grateful Golfer 2017 Golf Plan

My 2017 golf plan is ready and I think it will move much closer to my goal of being a scratch golfer. Unlike last year, I will have specific milestones to reach and timelines in ensure I stay focused throughout the year.

I am planning to use the same process as previous years because it works very well for my game. It is not complicated and helps me identify the areas I need/want to improve. Except, I am going to take it a step further. I found out last year that but not having quantifiable goals, I did not maximize the golfing opportunities. This year this is all going to change. Looking for Golf Drills on GIR

What does it take to make a good golfer great? As you read this question, something immediately to mind. For each of us, that special something is what we seek while practicing or playing. Knowing what is important to your game takes a bit of thought and introspection. It is something that examine on a routine basis, however in the off-season I take more time to look at all areas.

It is easy to grab the low hanging fruit and say I need to work on my putting or driving (and that is probably true, but don’t we all). I like to dig deeper and look for those couple of fixes that will help my overall game. It is the 20 / 80 rule that I use to improve my game. And this off-season I have already decided on my first order of focus next season. Continue reading

Osprey Links 3 Man Scramble – Results

As you will remember, Geary, Blair and I entered a 3 man scramble last Sunday at Osprey Links Golf Course. Jeff Rogerson, the club pro and general manager, organized a great event with the support of his awesome team. To top off the great golf, Jeff’s team provided a fantastic roast beef meal with all the fixings. It was a perfect way to end our time on the links.

Geary, Blair and I had never played together as a group, yet our individual strengths made us a good team on paper. So we embarked on a journey into the unknown, fun and excitement. The rules were fairly straight forward and not uncommon for a scramble tournament. We all arrived early, entered the skins competition, and prepared for a fun round on the links. There was 38 teams in this event with two teams starting off each hole and one par 5 had four teams. The day remained overcast with little wind and no rain.

By the time many of you read this post, the first round of The Open Championship will be under way. Some of the predictions will have come true and others…..well, lets just say better luck next time.

The predictions of many of the armchair pundits will be the talk of cyberspace, but unfortunately only a few will be proven to have the mental capabilities of the Amazing Kreskin! Which are you? Continue reading
