Golf is not a sport where unfocused practice benefits your overall game. I guess you could say that for most sports, however golf is that one sport where it is obvious when not focusing on the proper improvement areas will destroy your golf score. Over the years, I have offered many different drills and possible plans to lower our golf score. Many were proven approaches to successfully becoming a lower handicap golfer. Today, I found a golf plan the ties all of my musing together and it is a great way to lower your golf score.

Practicing The Right Things On The Golf Course
I started my practice plan in preparation for the upcoming Hickory Championship next Monday and Tuesday. As I stated yesterday, I had a plan to work on my short game, putting and ball contact. I played nine holes and hit 5 balls from various locations on each hole. It was a plan to test out my hickories to determine which club I should hit from what distance. The plan started off well, but I need to make a few adjustments moving forward.

If you have ever ventured onto a practice area, you instinctively know that hitting poor shots is all part of the practice. Of course we do not want to continually miss hit the ball, but there is no advancement in your swing without sucking a few lemons! (Okay that was really bad trying to mix too many metaphors together at one time…..sorry) While I am working on increasing my lag, balance and follow through I have hit some real stinkers. Don’t worry, I am not discouraged and neither should you. It is all about the process.

It is about that time of year when my golf juices really get flowing. We just had two days of double digit highs and the snow has receded by at least half. This generally means that it is time for me to start looking at the season ahead. But hold on a moment, it is still at least 4 to 5 weeks before golf courses in my area will be open for business. This timeline leads me to wonder what I should do that will slowly prepare me for my first hit of the season!

The golf swing has so many moving components, that it is a challenge to determine which areas are dominant during our golf swing. I can say for sure that I do not use my lets as much as I should when hitting driver and that might be a challenge I can fix in my DIY golf net. This is not an ‘ah-ha’ moment, just one of the many aspects of my golf swing that I know needs attention.
