Personally, I love playing in any golf tournaments. Each offer something different and I prepare differently for each. With the Ryder Cup looming on the horizon, I am being a bit nostalgic about not being able to play in any tournaments this year; especially scramble events! However, I did have the opportunity to discuss preparing for a scramble tournament with my friend Blair. He was in a 3 person event about a month ago and we discussed which player should play where; it was really quite fun, but we seemed to differ on the line up. Continue reading

In Between Clubs – Is This a Real Problem?
During the BMW Championship, I overheard several caddies talking to the player about yardage and how to adjust the grip on the club to ensure that they can make a full swing. This adjustment indicates that the player was in-between clubs for the yardage they wanted to hit. As I thought about my game compared to theirs, I rarely feel that I am in between clubs and the yardages I assess are plus or minus 5 yards anyway. So I ask, is being in between clubs a real problem for amateurs or is it something at only professionals need to be concerned with? Continue reading
I am Back to Playing Golf

Chipping for the first time in 4 months; time to knock off the rust!
After 6 months of treatment, I am finally back on the golf course. Albeit only chipping and putting, but I am back. I must say that this health imposed break from golf was challenging on many levels. Of course, I need to keep my perspective because golf is important, but not as important as doing daily activities with my wife and best friend. It is in this area I missed doing the fun things like kayaking, hiking, and day trips to explore our area. Now that I am back, we can pick up where we left off. Continue reading
How Wide is Your Putting Stance?
Over the years, I have tinkered with the width of my putting stance. It seems to me that when I adjust my feet, the rest of my body compensates for the change and I still putt fairly well. Interestingly, I noticed that the driving factor for adjusting my putting stance was comfort over the ball. Having said all this, I saw during the BMW Championship that many professionals have adopted a very narrow putting stance and I am trying to figure out why. Continue reading
How to Manage Your Golf Game
There is a new normal in my golf game for the next few months. After 21 days in the hospital receiving a stem cell transplant, it is time to focus on getting healthy and of course golf. As I move forward there is one factor I had not consider previous when making my back to the course plan: Energy! Yup, I underestimated the amount of energy it takes to do the simplest things. So, understanding my physical limitations, I now have to apply this new factor to my return to golf plan. Continue reading
