Working On Your Golf Game

Earlier in the week I posted about taking stats on my next round of golf. Although one round does not provide enough data to make any solid decisions on where I need to practice, the one round I played did provide some possible focus as to where I need work. With such a short season, it is a challenge to be patience with such a short golf season, but I do know that everything takes time. With a small sample set, this is where I realize I need the most work.

Playing Golf The Hard Way

With all the videos and articles out there telling you the easiest way to play golf, I thought it would be fun to talk about reality. The reality is that golf can be easy, but for most players it is difficult and a challenge. I went through the entire gambit of these emotions yesterday while playing golf at my home course. I am slowly knocking the rust off my game and I understand the process of improvement each year, but I feel that to improve my game the most, I need to focus on what I do best and improve on the other areas throughout the season. Hitting Mid Irons Like Professionals

Often overlooked, mid irons (5, 6, and 7 irons) are often overlooked by amateurs as they like to hit the hybrids and woods as much as possible. At Osprey Links, I hit my mid irons on at least half the holes. This happens on most par 4s (of which there are 9) and as such, half of my approach shots occur with these clubs. Establishing this need, I have to wonder if there is anything special I need to do to ensure I hit my mid irons like professionals.

Putting From The Right Side Of The Hole

Watching the action at Torrey Pines, I am continually struck by the importance of putting from the proper position. I watched many players lip out because they were in the wrong position caused by being on the wrong side of the hole. I realized that many approach shots were made with medium irons and that makes a difficult task for any golfer and Torrey Pines just makes it more challenging. But enough of the difficult conditions at the US Open, the lessons I learned from watching golf this weekend is hitting my approach shot the proper side of the hole is as critical for shooting low scores.

Taking Golf All In Stride

When and where is the tipping point in our golf game? You know, that point where all our hard work pays off and we can move on to improving / acquiring a different skill. It is like walking up stairs and each step is a new skill. Our game plateaus for a time until we decide to focus our improvement on a different skill. I guess this is true for all learned skills, but more prevalent in golf.
