Is Equating Our Golf Score To Success The Proper Approach To Good Golf?

Why keep score in golf? This fundamental question is likely garnering many quizzical looks right now, but it is a legitimate question. Short of competition, does the score really matter or is it an arbitrary number that does not really mean that much? If we are only competing against ourselves during most rounds, than the score really should not matter that much. The joy of hitting the ball into the hole is the goal of each hole and if we succeed at this small task, then how many strokes it took really is irrelevant. Right? Yet, most golfers (including myself most rounds) feel it is important to equate our success to the score. This might be the wrong approach for beginners and I dare say some more experienced players!

Keeping Everyone’s Golf Score

Keeping score for most golfers is the benchmark by which they determine if they had a good round or not. Personally, it is only part of how I measure my rounds, but for sure I keep everyone’s score whether they ask me too or not. Having said that of course, during friendly matches I keep a hole by hole score in case I am asked. During competitions, I track everyone’s score, especially mine and the my assigned opponents. It is a habit I formed years ago and have not stopped today.

What Did You Shoot On That Hole?

Have you ever wondered how some players notoriously forget how many strokes they made on a hole? I can understand that adding up penalty strokes with the actual number of swings can sometimes be challenging. Or, from time to time overlooking one stroke (it happens to everyone). However, playing with that person who never knows how many strokes they took or habitually leaves a couple of strokes off can make for a challenging round!

I have to admit, I was finding it hard to write about golf for today. I seem to have a mental block or something, but I finally decided on the following topic. How do you keep score when playing golf. It seems like a strange topic, yet I assure you there is a plethora (nice word) of ways to determine your score. They all have their advantages and depending on the day, I will choose from any of them.
