Playing With Hickorys

Hickorys rule.

Over the years, especially at the Toronto Golf Show, I have encountered hickory shafted golf clubs. Although I have never swung one, they provide a glimpse into the history of golf. I think that before I am done playing, I will try and play a round of golf with hickory shafted golf clubs. But that is a discussion for another day.

Toronto Golf Show Part 1

driving-to-the-golf-showWhat a day! For 4 hours, I was immersed in nothing but golf at the Toronto Golf Show. It was a great day and the 8 hours of driving was definitely worth it.

If you were following my adventure, we started out at 7 am in the rain and it followed us for the first 2.5 hours of the first leg of our trip from North Bay to Toronto. Blair did all the driving, thanks Blair, and I was the navigator. I think I did a fantastic job, however Blair might have a different view. We missed a couple of coffee stops early in our journeys, but after a couple of sips of the black gold, we were good to go! Continue reading

Heading to the Toronto Golf Show

Toronto Golf Show logoThe Toronto Golf & Travel Show does not generally disappoint. It is a mecca of golf for three days at the International Centre by Pearson International Airport! With 100s of booths, there is something for everyone. This will be my fourth year in a row heading to this great event and I am stoked to start my trip.

This year my buddy Blair is making the 3.5 hour drive, one way, with me to take in his first golf show. We are leaving at 0 dark 30 to get there before the gates open at noon.

How Often Do You Play Golf?

How often do you play golf? The answer most of you are saying in your mind is “not often enough”. I am not sure that is correct answer, but who am I to judge anyone about anyone’s game! Personally, I find that 4-5 days a week is plenty; I even alternate and on opposite weeks to play 3-4 times in a 7 day period. And that includes practice!

At the Toronto Golf Show, I committed to play 80 rounds this year. I am currently at 30 and I have not touch a club in 2 weeks (I missed Men’s Night on Wednesday because the group I was going to play in was full). I think I will make it!

I believe that it is possible to play golf too often. Not being a professional, I find that life must take priority sometimes and over the years (like this one) life activities forces a 2 or 3 week break once or twice during the golf season. I am definitely okay with the break because I am confident I will be able to play enough golf during the entire season. How about you? Continue reading

GAO Growing the Game!

Walking around the Toronto Golf Show I was happy to see a variety of booths and kiosks. As we meandered down ‘demo alley’, I spied the area for the Golf Association of Ontario. As a current member, I was drawn to their location like a moth to light. I talked to many of the hosts and hostesses about the GAO and was impressed by what they had to offer. There were two ‘Grow the Game’ initiatives presented at the Toronto Golf Show I had never heard of and after some research realized there were more worth mentioning!

The first was a pledge to play golf in 2016! The GAO provided a unique way to challenge golfers to hit the links this summer. Like all goals when written down, most people become motivated and accountable to achieve them. In the 2016 golf season, I have committed to play 80 rounds of golf. Given I have 28 weeks to achieve my goal, I think it is achievable. I will let you know when the season is over. Continue reading
