In May of 2015, my wife and I travelled to Edinburgh, Scotland. We were there for only a few days and before anyone asks, I did not go golfing. We spent our time exploring Edinburgh and taking a walk through history.
On the first day, the sun was shining and the weather forecast suggested it was this day that was best for climbing Arthur’s Seat. This 822 foot ‘hill’ was formed by an extinct volcano and could be climbed from several directions. Enjoying our walk, my wife and I missed the easy ascent path and ended up climbing to the summit of Arthur’s Seat via the vertical stair route. Although this route was more difficult, it really was not that big of a deal. However, we did take the easy route down.

During our adventure up to the peak, we were amazed by the beautiful scenery. We liked seeing the city, Edinburgh Castle, and the many spires from the cathedrals all around the city. As we looked all around, I was happy to see many golf courses in the area, but the one course built-in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat caught my attention the most.
From what I can determine, this course is a “James Braid designed Prestonfield Golf Club is nestled below the stunning backdrop of Arthur’s seat in a former deer estate in Edinburgh. With the imposing backdrop and mature trees, you would be forgiven for thinking the course was set in a country estate rather than only 1.5 miles from Edinburgh city centre.”

Seeing this course from the top of Arthur’s Seat only made our trip to the top of the Edinburgh skyline more enjoyable! Many golfing adventurers can appreciate the beauty of Prestonfield, and the unique happenstance of finding this gem while on our trek. Life is about enjoying the journey and not just the destination. In this case, Prestonfield definitely made our journey more exciting.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

How could you stand there viewing that wonderful golf course, and not run down there and get yourself on the 1st tee.

Although it would be expensive, it is worth the trip! If your grandson golfs, even better!

Glad you found your trek to the top well worth it, the views across Edinburgh from the top or Arthurs Seat can be superb. I have actually never played at Prestonfield Golf Course but I know many people who have done as I actually live in Edinburgh. I reckon I will give this course a go sometime soon as the pictures really show it off well. Did you do much in the old town of Edinburgh? The Royal Mile etc?
Thanks for the read!

Welcome to The Grateful Golfer Community. My wife and I did walk around much of the down town core including the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, several cathedrals, Calton Hill, and much more. It was a wonderful visit.
