The 2019 PGA Championship – Day One

Bethpage Black golf course is a beast! It played long today and many players found out how difficult of a course it really plays. Not surprisingly, the top players navigated around the course fairly well with a few notable exceptions. Hopefully, these players will get back on track during day two. More importantly, Brooks Koepka is at the top of the leaderboard and looks very strong at this time.

The action was pretty much as I expected. The tournament record by Brooks Koepka of -7 was a bit of surprise, yet Danny Lee is right on his heals at -6. The rest of the scores were pretty much as I expected.

Bethpage Black is proving to be as tough as we expected. The rough is very thick and lush; thus making any wayward shot difficult and most recoveries challenging. The length is causing challenges for many players, but the real story is putting. There were not many long putts made and even the short 4 footers were a challenge. If the course happens to dry out any more, I can only imagine the fits the players will have going into the weekend.

It is still too early to make any real assessment of the play because at anytime, someone could step up and shoot a -5 or lower. If this happens today, then the leaderboard adjustment expected on day two will through all the pundits predictions out the window. All I can say right now is that Koepka and Lee look very strong and if anyone wants to challenge them for the Wanamaker Trophy, they better start today.

In case you missed the highlights:

On a side note, I am happy to see Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth in the top 10. I wish the both good shooting today during round two!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
