Golf Is Frustrating

Every golfer has experienced some level of frustration on the golf course. As amateurs, our frustration generally increases when our expectations eclipse our results. I know that when I hit the links I expect to hit all my shots clear and on line. Of course, that is rarely the case, but I am not the only one in this boat.

It is important to understand that regardless of our abilities, every golfer makes a poor shot from time to time. It is law of averages sometimes, but it happens. Take a look:

I can attest that I have made everyone of those poor shots in the video. In fact, I have made several of them during one round of golf. It is frustrating and disappointing, yet it does not deter me from trying over and over to master every shot.

Golf can be a fun sport if we understand and manage our expectations. In my case, if I am on the fairway, I expect to hit a solid shot every time. I realize that as soon as we delve into the “always” and “never” range of the shot making spectrum that I will be disappointed periodically. In those cases, I believe that my expectations are realistic and stuff happens when I mishit.

Conversely, if I am in a difficult lie, the rough, or sand, I should lower my expectations about always making a great shot. My percentages are lower because the difficulty of the shot has risen. Hence, my frustration to a poor shot should (emphasis on should) be lower. Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. But, those are my mental and emotional challenges when I play.

Regardless of you skill level, golf can be frustrating. I think that our vexation level is directly aligned with our expectations. This is not an epiphany by any measure, but a reminder that even professionals make poor shots from time to time.

So, the next time you are on the links and feel yourself becoming frustrated, remember that you are not alone. All golfers have been in your shoes; the trick is to shelve that feeling and be grateful for the opportunity to play golf.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. A friend, who played at a high collegiate level told me, “Don’t ever take golf too seriously”. He explained that everyone reaches a plateau in this game, and that is as good as you’re going to get. When you hit your plateau, recognize it and just enjoy the game. It’s a wonderful game and was meant to be enjoyed.

  2. Time again for my favorite golf joke. The reason the game was named golf is because all the good four letter words were taken.🤣

Frustration is certainly a mainstay in this game. Even when we play our best we always know at least a shot or two could have been better. All we can do is put it behind us and look to the next swing.
