Is Playing Golf With You Fun?

There are many reasons why players enjoy playing golf. Many deal with the social aspect of spending 3+ hours in a beautiful place chatting and soaking up the good vibes. Much of this elation stems from the interaction between players. Understanding some of the basic do’s and don’ts goes a long way to ensuring that players are having fun playing golf with you.

The proper term for much of what I am talking about is etiquette. Defined as “the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group”, etiquette is something that most golfers take seriously. It can make or break someone’s time on the links. Over the years, I have learned through trial and error that etiquette on the golf course is important and should be abided by everyone.

To kick things off, here is a video of seven basic etiquette guidelines that all beginning golfers should understand:

Etiquette on the golf course is not limited to the seven mentioned above. There are many, many more that beginning golfers will learn over time. I believe it is up to experienced golfers to gently educate new duffers. We do not need to hit the over the head with the plethora of etiquette guidelines, but to offer a few polite suggestions. I have found that this approach is well received and appreciated.

One of the overlooked etiquette lessons is removing your hat to shake hands after a round of golf. I was taught this particular action by my Dad when I first started playing golf. He explained that taking off the hat shows respect & shaking hands symbolizes friendship. It is something that has stuck with me during all the years of playing. I definitely remove my hat after a round regardless of my playing partners do or not. Personally, I think it is classy when players remove their hat and I recommend all players adopt this important etiquette lesson.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Am I fun to play with? Probably not really (I’ve never been the life of the party kind of guy) but about 8 or 10 around here seem to think I’m not terrible company since they keep inviting me to play even when they keep losing money. But I do tend to hear ‘I hate you’ in the skins rounds a bit more than some on the course of late. lol

But I do a good job of conforming. I tend to play ready golf, but anytime I’m with a group that has a more old school sensibility I’ll not create upset. Golf’s hard enough. Don’t need to add to the frustrations we already have to endure.

  2. Jim, good video, thanks. They touched on ‘noise’ but didn’t mention the new third rail of etiquette (music). I think that needs to be addressed with not just beginners but seasoned players.

    Thanks,
