There are too many times points of view on the topic of swing thoughts when executing a golf shot. I mean, depending on who you talk too (professional or amateur) the number distinctly varies. Regardless of what type of shot we are making, the thought processes provide a ripe ground for multiple swing thoughts on many different levels. Is this a good thing? Or it does not matter at all? What is the real answer?
My personal view is simple. Prior to hitting the ball have as much self chatter as you want. But when you make a decision and start moving towards your ball (after your pre-shot routine is completed), one swing thought is okay until you start to actually move the club. Then nothing at all should be going through your mind. Let your body do its thing.
I found an interesting video by Pete Cowan on swing thoughts. He boils all swing thoughts down to one characteristic. Take a look:
I have long espoused that a positive attitude is critical to a great golf swing. I have talked about attitude and how it greatly impacts my game. I have offered a new term called GAF (Golf Attitude Factor) Attitude is very important and I will continue to focus on keeping mine positive. This mental approach works very well for my game and I think yours will as well.
If you search for “too many golf swing thoughts”, be prepared for a plethora of responses. The consensus is no more than zero to one. Clearing our mind of white noise is very important to executing the proper golf swing for your game. It is a process, but one that every golf should develop if they want to lower their golf scores. If you are wondering, even Rory McIlroy uses a swing thought….just one!
There is such a thing as too many swing thoughts. They are the bane of every golfers existence and should be controlled if at all possible. In my opinion, the range is the best place to develop a process to mentally prepare for golf, but that is completely up to you. Regardless of your approach, developing a positive attitude and minimizing the number of swing thoughts in your head is an important step to be your best self as a golfer.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
