The 2024 Masters – Day 2 Thoughts

What can be said about the second day at the Masters? It was a crazy windy and reeked havoc on all the players. Everyone to a tee said that the conditions were horrific and took all their skill to carve out any possible gains. With only 6 players breaking par during the second round (compared to 28 on the first day) this tells a story all on its own. Of course the wind was the main cause for all the players challenges on day 2, but it was not the only thing that had the field scratching their heads.

The wind was the primary factor, but its secondary challenges are sometimes overlooked. For instance, the players in the afternoon played in much tougher conditions as the course dried out significantly over the 12 hours. Putts were rolling out farther, taking more of the break and were generally harder to read. When you watch a player barely tap a ball and it rolls 15 feet or watching player after player spin their ball off the green on approach shots, it is not difficult to see that the course is playing very hard a fast round the greens.

You know it was tough during the second round when a 2 under par round moves you 9 places up the standing (Colin Morikawa) and a 3 under round (best of the day – shot by Ludvig Åberg) moves you up 28 places on the leaderboard.

Yesterday’s round was about survival. Today’s round will be the epitome of the term ‘Moving Day’. The conditions will contribute to lower scores and a greater chance for players 5 strokes back to climb up the leaderboard. To accomplish this challenging feat, hitting fairways and greens is a must. With the conditions favorable to hitting their ball where intended and a reasonable chance to anticipate their ball flight. I predict that half the of the 53 person field will break par today.

How can I close of my article without mentioning Tiger Woods and 24 consecutive cuts made at the Masters. Absolutely amazing! What I found more interesting is his attitude that being 8 back, he still thinks he has a chance to win. And knowing Tiger, he propably does.

Today is moving day! Who is going to make the biggest gains?

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim, Scheffler is in the calmness zone. I think he separates from the pack and wins it. The bigger question: Odds that Tiger finishes 72 holes. I’d say 50-50. Enjoy the weekend!
