Practicing The Right Things On The Golf Course

I started my practice plan in preparation for the upcoming Hickory Championship next Monday and Tuesday. As I stated yesterday, I had a plan to work on my short game, putting and ball contact. I played nine holes and hit 5 balls from various locations on each hole. It was a plan to test out my hickories to determine which club I should hit from what distance. The plan started off well, but I need to make a few adjustments moving forward.

The first thing I need to adjust is the time of day. I went out early thinking he course would be empty and I could hit multiple balls from know distances. The course was empty, but I could not see where my ball landed for the first 5 holes. I only knew how well I hit the ball after walking up to where the ball was lying. Other than swinging the club, I did not gain the data required to determine which club goes what distance. So, next time I will play when it is not foggy.

The next then I found out is that I am not going to carry my clubs at the tournament. They are too heavy when I have 14 clubs in the bag. Hence, I will revert to my push cart and cart bag. It makes sense to conserve my energy during the 36 hole event in order to finish strong.

The benefits I did gain from playing yesterday was in the chipping and putting department. I used four different clubs around the green trying to figure out which club will be best and how to hit them. The Jigger is a must use as if is low profile and has the same apparent lie as my seven iron. Therefore, I am already comfortable with it and the more I use it the better I will be able to execute a bump and run.

I used the highest lofted club with pretty good success. It is like my gap wedge but the bottom edge is sharp and has a tendency to dig on or before contact. I am learning to skim the club along the grass in order to maximize the loft without chucking the shot.

Putting is as per normal. I do find the grip is a be small on my putter and I think can rectify that this week. However, I like this club and feel confident standing over all putts.

Overall, my practice time on the links was well worth the effort. I accomplished some stuff and missed out on others. Regardless, I will move forward today and the rest of the week in order to prepare for the upcoming event. I am enjoying the process and liking the results……so far! 😉

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  2. I suspect the lack of bounce on the high lofted club would be comparable to my lob wedge. It’s a very low bounce version and the leading edge is difficult to keep from digging in when set up as I would normally.

The “trick” I use with it is to get closer to the ball and get the shaft more upright. That sets the club toe down and in that position it won’t dig in.

It takes some practice to get the aim right but it works so well I do it often now. Bad lies are simply easier to deal with when chipping using a toe down orientation.
