Flipping our hands through contact is a definite no-no in golf. This statement is nothing new and many golfers understand this concept. Knowing what not to do is often as important as knowing what to properly do during our golf swing. From time to time I make poor contact with my irons (actually more often than I want) because I am hitting behind the ball. This poor swing action is caused by several different reasons, but one is more apparent than the others. It is a know swing fault, but for some reason I cannot avoid this mistake.
Flipping our hands through contact results in two major swing errors. The first is scooping the ball where we add loft to our club thus hitting the higher and shorter than intended. The second is to hit behind the ball causing all kinds of trouble. In my case, hitting behind the ball is my biggest swing error and I know why. But first, lets delve into what flipping and compressing the golf ball means.
I play my best golf when I compress the golf ball and produce a divot after contact. This swing action is accepted as the best result after contact. The challenge I have is hitting behind the ball producing a poor result in either accuracy or distance or both. In my case, ball position is the issue.
One would think that being a single digit handicapper I would have the issue of ball position in my stance down pat. Well, for the most part I do. Unfortunately, I mentally lose focus and my ball creeps up in my stance creating the conditions for poor contact with my irons. Sometimes this challenge pops up for a couple of holes until I refocus my intent and fix the challenge. But, hitting behind the ball is nothing new and requires my attention to avoid during every round of golf.
It is interesting to me that most golfers have the knowledge (or at least some of the knowledge) about the best way to swing our golf clubs. Yet, we still make silly errors like poor ball position before contact. This part of golf is frustrating and should be avoided. Regardless, applying the proper knowledge and understanding on how to best make your golf swing work takes effort and focus. I know this is the case for my game. Moving forward, I will try to stay focused on my ball position and hopefully avoid hitting behind the ball before contact.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
One thought that helps me get ball first contact is to make sure I’m getting the center of my chest past the ball before/at impact.

That is a good swing thought. I will have to try it. Thanks.
