The high pitch shot is one of the more difficult skills to master in golf. It requires a great deal of confidence to swing fast at a ball that is close to green. Additionally, the mechanics does cause some challenges to the less skilled players, however it is a shot that most elite players have developed (in one form or another) in order to refine their short game. I use this shot from time to time, but it was not until recently that I realized my aim point was wrong and I was following through incorrectly. To continually seek improvement in my short game, I found a simple process that helps eliminate my high pitch aiming challenges.
Interestingly, the aim point and foot position change with a high pitch shot. One would think that keeping everything square would be the best way to execute the specialty shot, however this is not the case. Aiming away from the target seems to be the correction many of us over look.
As I think about it more, aiming for this type of delicate shot is much like playing out of the bunker. When I want to splash out of the sand, I aim left of the pin and let my club follow my normal swing plane. As the ball rises out of the bunker, it is usually on my aim line. I guess that is the same for a high pitch shot. After watching the video, it seems so simple that I should have thought of it years ago.
There are always different aspects of my game that need refining. There are an equal amount of areas that I need to discover to improve my game. Golf is the type of sport where I am always learning and increasing my knowledge. Hitting high pitch shots was one of those areas that benefitted from my poking around in areas I did not truly understand. Well, that is over now and hopefully the veil has been raised for you as well.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
