Is Slicing The Golf Ball Destroying Your Scores

If a golfer has a swing fault, it usually is a slice. And no matter how hard we try, that slice ball flight never goes away. I am fortunate as I rarely play a slice. My ball travels straight indicating I have made square contact with the ball. This does not mean I do not hit errand shots, but it does allow me to play from a safe position more often than not. When I did have a slice, many years ago, I worked tirelessly with the goal of removing this swing fault. Well, I wish I would have and the internet back then because it might have sped up my learning curve.

Over the years I tried many different slice fixes. Eventually, the proper swing plane dropped into my lap. It was not really a fluke, but when it happened I knew I had found the fixed I needed to play better golf. To help beginners along with fixing their slice, I found a step by step video that by Hank Haney that might be useful:

I like the way he walks us through the steps on how to fix a slice. At first I thought it was an odd approach, but when he tied it all together at the end (albeit quickly) I realized that this process might work for some newbie golfers. I know I would have tried it in my early stages of my golf journey. It is hard to say if it would have worked, but the foundation of his process would have been beneficial for my game.

Golf is a particularly strange game because there is not one fix that works with every player. The variables to each individual swing are too numerous to count. However, starting some where is the first step to success. As you walk you path towards better golf, I am confident you will try many things. I recommend discarding the things that do not work and embrace those that do. Sometimes that is way harder than you think.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Not mine. In fact hitting a slice saves me a stroke or two here and there when I find myself out of position. It’s a shot we should all be able to manage when we need it I think.

While it’s not generally what we want to see with every swing, it can come in handy here and there when we find ourselves out of position.

That said I’d also argue that if you slice it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. I know guys that play their slice pretty well. In fact the last hole in one I witnessed was a big slice to a short par 3 by a guy who plays one pretty well.

He may be the shortest hitter in the skins game because of his slice, but he controls it very well and has the short game to make up for it.
