When Do You Practice Your Golf Game?

Golfers talk a great deal about practicing their golf game in order to achieve a lower score. They lament about what they should do and fret over the time it will take to improve their overall game. I think most golfers have walked this path and most do not make the commitment to get better, they just talk about it. Given the time requirements and the cost in many cases, practicing rarely occurs outside the time we dedicate to playing a round a golf. So, does mean that our game will never improve if we practice very little, not really, but there is a cost to pay following this path.

I wish I could tell you many secret ways to improve your golf game on course, but that would be a challenge at best. Golf is a game of repetition where the more we swing the club the better chances we have of improving. By limiting practice time off the course, the path to success will be longer and more frustrating. The choice of whether to dedicate that time to improving is yours alone, but understand that whatever path you chose you need to own it!

Over the past few years, I have taken to practicing more on the golf course. I have a membership and play many times a week. Knowing this, I like to place myself in real world situations on the course and hit a couple of balls trying different clubs. Of course I can only do this when the course is empty or very slow. Regardless, I make sure my efforts to practice specific shots does not impact the pace of play. I do spend some time practicing off the golf course because I know its value, however my passion to greatly improve is not a strong as in the past. I am okay with just having fun and enjoying my time on the links.

Golf is an individual sport that allows each player to determine their path. Knowing that your improvement is dependent on many factors (time being by the greatest), it is up to you how you want to spend that precious resource. Depending on your choice, own it and move on. Lamenting about what you should do to improve your game vice what you are doing can cause a source of frustration.

I chose to be grateful for the path I take each golf season. Sometimes I improve my game and others I slide back slowly. Regardless, of the end result, I am chose to be happy and grateful I am still golfing.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. I’m practicing mostly on the course. And not just when I can go out alone. I’m practicing even in my skins games. I still haven’t taken that new 7 wood to the range but I’m playing it for instance. And since my approach game seems to be my biggest failure point at present I’m not using tee’s except when hitting driver and not using my driver on but 3 holes.

It costs me a skin here and there maybe, but it’s good practice under pressure that I don’t have to try and simulate. It’s real. It’s not the measly quarter, it’s the bragging rights. 🤣

On another note, I tried out a new (to me) ball last week. Can’t say I recommend the Calloway Max ball. I would guess that if you have an issue striking the ball too high on the face it might help somewhat, but I see only bad things from playing a bigger ball.

It’s going to be affected more by the wind and it’s harder to fit in the hole. It will lip out easier I think simply because of it’s size. I know it kept me from an ace in Tuesdays skins game. I tested it.

I hit a great shot that landed about a foot behind and 6 feet left of the flag. I’d hit a tiny draw to have it catch the slope and slow it down a little because the greens are pretty fast at the moment and it was perfect.

It hit and bounced once and just trickled down to the hole. The pin wasn’t standing perfectly straight and it bounced off half an inch. After tapping in, I rolled the guys balls down a few times and their balls all fell in. Mine wouldn’t even fall when I tapped it in. It just got trapped between pin and the cups edge and refused to fall to the bottom of the hole.

After that, I’m sure it’s a ball I’ll never buy again.
