Do you hit behind the ball often during a round of golf? The ‘chunk’ shot is so frustrating that it literally causes fits in many players. Bottoming out your swing plane at the wrong position is a constant theme of an unsuccessful golf swing. This challenge is very prevalent in beginner golfers, some mid handicap golfers and sometimes in elite players. It is something that all golfers are wary off when playing and fortunately there are a few fixes after you identify your swing challenge. Lets delve into why we hit behind the ball and potential fixes.
First, lets discuss the three main issues associated with hitting behind the ball. These swing faults will cover almost all of the reasons we hit behind the ball and are universal.
As you can see, weight distribution, swing plane, and ball in your stance are the three main faults. Over my many years of play, I have experienced them all. The third fault of ball position is the one reoccurring error in my game. It happens because I stop paying attention and my golf ball creeps up in my stance. After a couple of poor hits and the odd ‘chunk’ shot I understand that my ball position is off. Unfortunately, I will have gather a few unwanted strokes to my score. Alas, that is the nature of golf.
My best fix of avoiding chuck shots is to ensure I am following my pre-shot routine. This simple and quick process helps me stay focused on what I need to achieve if I want to hit the ball consistently. I have talked about this process in the past and it might be worth looking at again. A pre-shot routine is something that all golfers should develop regardless of your skill level.
Hitting behind the golf ball is very frustrating. Fortunately, there are fixes to avoid this swing error. It does take some time to work on the fixes, but it is definitely worth the effort.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
I would add feet separation is something that’s going to change slightly for different body types. For instance the pros want my feet closer together than this video suggests. I stand taller, have clubs bent more upright.
These are great rules of thumb but seeing a pro will likely serve you best.
And Brian brings a good point as well. Ball position will get tweaked for fades and draws too. As will the plane of the swing.

Jim, the swing plane is a biggie. It’s also an artifact of something happening earlier in the swing. I.e. the player not rotating properly and failing to cover the shot with their chest. When this is done correctly, it eliminates the early release (off plane) and chunk. If done properly, you should be able to tweak ball position back and forth to hit lower or higher shots without issue.
Good read; thanks.

Brian,
Thanks for the input. There are so many moving parts that it does take a great deal of time to understand them all. I hope you are playing well. My season is coming to an end very soon.
Cheers Jim
