Ghana Golf

Recently, through the magic of social media and blogging, I came across Tom Kennedy. His CV is quite long and extensive, but what peaked my interest is new position as the Director of Golf for Ghana!  Recently taking over, he is faced with many challenges. These challenges are things that we western golfers take for granted:  good golf courses, accessibility, many media outlets, etc.  This has not deterred Tom, but only inspired him to bring golf to Ghana.

He has set up all the social media sites, but still has challenges with exposure of the game of golf in Ghana. A recent interview with Tom outlined his focus in the right area:

IM – Will you be responsible for promoting youth golf?

TK – Absolutely! It’s vital to start playing golf at a young age. Right from the beginning, I’ll be developing grass-roots golf with all of my energy and enthusiasm by introducing Junior Golf Programmes at all of the Golf Clubs. I understand that there is a large, secondary school overlooking the golf course at Achimota GC, where I will be based – no better place to begin prospecting for future golf talent than right there! Achimota is regarded as Ghana’s best course. There’s a strong Irish presence and influence due to Tullow Oil having an operation close by.

Focusing on the juniors is a way to build a strong foundation for future golfers.  It will take longer, but building from the ground floor up will develop a sustainable and viable program for years to come!

This is the first of several blogs I intend to dedicate to the development of golf in Ghana. I cannot think of a better way to help others enjoy the game that provides so much.  Stay tuned for future updates and possible ways for you to help.

Seven Days in Utopia

Recently, I was surprised by a golf movie called Seven Days in Utopia. The movie dealt with how golf is not just a game, but has an impact on our entire life.  As I am always on the hunt for a good golf movie, Seven Days in Utopia is one I would watch again next winter.

Utopia

The overview of the move is: After a disastrous début on the pro circuit, a young golfer finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Utopia, Texas and welcomed by an eccentric rancher.

Robert Duvall is Johnny Crawford and ex PGA player.  He says the classic line about Luke Chisholm (Lucas Black): How can a game have such an effect on a man’s soul? The way I see it, how can it not? You don’t chose the game, it choses you. And when it does, life and golf become forever connected. That’s how it was for a young man named Luke Chisholm.

I do not want to give to much of the movie away, but I do think it is worth a watch.  The movie can go two ways for the viewer.  As a golfer, It offers some great advice that can help anyone’s game.  As a feel good movie, it talks about how the world around us affects all aspects of your game.  I found the movie enjoyable.  I hope you do as well!

Golf Videos to Inspire and Make You Laugh

Golfing is tough. It is not an easy sport to play and even more challenging to write about. Finding new and interesting topics is challenging, but maybe it is time to change it up a little and change the medium.  Here are three videos I found on the net that provides an explanation about golf that you may find useful.  Enjoy!

Hitting The Wall

Hitting the wall In endurance sports such as cycling and runninghitting the wall or the bonk describes a condition caused by the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by sudden fatigue and loss of energy. Milder instances can be remedied by brief rest and the ingestion of food or drinks containing carbohydrates. The condition can usually be avoided by ensuring that glycogen levels are high when the exercise begins, maintaining glucose levels during exercise by eating or drinking carbohydrate-rich substances, or by reducing exercise intensity.”

I bet you were thinking of the 17th hole at St. Andrews Old Course!  It is a famous site that provides once in a life time shots for amateurs and pros alike.  Only the brave will venture a heroic shot off the wall; giving credence to the saying “Where there is no risk; there is no reward!”  Regardless, this is still not what I am talking about.

Hitting the wall is a golf drill with many variations.  There are three specific drills I like and recommend.  I will be using all three as spring approaches with the intent to increase my power off the tee.

Solid-Golf-Shots

For Beginner Golfers

The first is a great wall drill for beginners from Hitting It Solid by Troy Vayanos.  This drill uses a wall or a chair. Troy’s drill works on posture. He states that “the most common reason golfers don’t hit solid golf shots is because they lose their posture on the downswing.”  He provides a simple step by step process to fix this common error.  I will use it in the beginning of my golf season to remind my body the proper position when addressing the ball.

The next drill comes from the National Golf Academy.  It is for intermediate golfers who have the general mechanics of the golf swing down, but want more power.  This particular drill is very good for players like myself who would like an extra 10-15 yards or more off the tee.  This is definitely a drill I will use before the season starts.

The last wall drill comes from David Leadbetter.  This drill is for the advanced player who wants to fine tune or improve their overall swing.  This particular drill is might be difficult and requires an understanding of swing mechanics.  Having said that, anyone can use it with varying degrees of success.  Again, I plan to use this drill in the off season as I wait for the 3 feet of snow to melt!

Hitting the wall can deal with the physical nature of a sport.  However, in this case it means using three outstanding drills by the beginner, intermediate and advanced golfer to improve their game.  Know which drill is best for you might be a challenge; I recommend you try all three and let me know which you like the best!

I am a grateful golfer!  53 days until golf season!
