I use two different golf GPS measuring devices. In 2013, I first purchased a Garmin Approach 6 and that is the topic of my article today. It is a fantastic device and I found that it improved my course management skills and club selection. For the past 5 years, I have used the device to glean the front, pin and back yardage needed to determine shot selection. It is only recently after purchasing a laser finder, that I realized that I miss using my device and it was costing me strokes. Want to know how? Continue reading

How High Do You Tee Your Ball – Revisited
In 2012, I wrote an article about the proper height to tee up your ball when hitting a driver. I used different sources and provided the 80% solution for the average golfer. If you read the research, you will find that most teaching professionals recommend a higher teed ball for making better contact, increased distance and more control. This year at Shinnecock, the USGA has made the course a beast that gives professional golfers fits of anxiety. For an amateur, watching the best golfers in the world seem mortal can be unsettling. Yet some of the players appear to have solved the puzzle and score relatively well. I wonder what their secret is, do you? Continue reading
Playing Golf in Groups
I like playing golf both in a group and on my own. I find each composition or combination of players adds its own dynamic to the game. Obviously, in a scramble format, multiple players are needed and desired to make up a team. And depending on the personalities, that team could play very well together or not. Lately, my teams have met with some success on the podium, but mostly our dynamics is what has made each round better and more fun than the last.
Having said that, there is nothing like walking a solo round of golf early in the morning with my thoughts and the sound of nature. It is quite invigorating. Continue reading
