US Open Musings

The US Open is upon us! It is going to be exciting and frustrating all at the same time. Pundits think the big hitters have the advantage; I believe that a bigger hitter is going to win, but not for the reasons you might think. I predict Dustin Johnson is going to win because he will keep his ball in play more than the rest of the field.

This post, however, is not about what I think, but what the pros think about their upcoming challenges. Continue reading

2017 US Open Review and Predictions

“During the week of June 12-18, 2017, the U.S. Open Championship will be contested in Wisconsin for the first time. The championship will welcome the world’s top players vying for the title that has been contested since 1895. The United States Golf Association will provide the ultimate, most comprehensive test in golf to identify the best of the best, with past champions including Bob Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Wisconsin’s own Andy North and Tiger Woods.” (US Open)

With under two weeks to go, many pundits are analyzing the data, watching which player is streaking, and trying to pick that underdog who may rise to the top. It is a challenging and stressful time for some, but for The ‘Amazing Kreskins’ at The Grateful Golfer, it is time to confirm your choices. Continue reading

US Open Final Thoughts

Congratulations to Dustin Johnson for winning the 2016 US Open. Despite some drama on the 5th hole, he played extremely well on a tough course. His approach shot on the 18th hole was clutch and it was one of the many highlights of the day. He putted very well (which was key to his win) and carding a final round 69 was exactly what he needed to walk away with is first, of many, Major championship.

Dustin’s round was solid and consistent; exactly what was needed to claim the US Open Trophy. There were other highlights of the final round, both good and bad, however Oakmont appeared to be the talk of the weekend and I am not sure the course should be center stage of any Major, however the media chose this issue as their main theme. As the US Open unfolds, many pundits are scratching their heads wondering where all the superstars are! The are definitely not at the top of the leader board except for Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. These stars are household names in golf with others some the others like Shane Lowery, Jim Furyk and Bubba Watson just a few strokes back.

The second round was delayed for darkness, however the top players in the world have some work to do just to make the cut! Are we really surprised at the current leaderboard…..really? Continue reading

2016 US Open Picks

The US Open has a tradition of being the most challenging Major. This year, Oakmont Golf Course will help uphold this tradition and perhaps vex most of the field in the process! In 2007, Tiger Woods commented that “That golf course is going to be one of the toughest tests that we’ve ever played in a U.S. Open, especially if it’s dry, it will be unreal because those greens are so severe.” This year should be no different!

US Open Trophy

Picking a winner at this year’s US Open is challenging and complex. The number of variables would challenge Albert Einstein, however, sometimes keeping it simple is the best solution!
