US Open Final Thoughts

Congratulations to Dustin Johnson for winning the 2016 US Open. Despite some drama on the 5th hole, he played extremely well on a tough course. His approach shot on the 18th hole was clutch and it was one of the many highlights of the day. He putted very well (which was key to his win) and carding a final round 69 was exactly what he needed to walk away with is first, of many, Major championship.

Dustin’s round was solid and consistent; exactly what was needed to claim the US Open Trophy. There were other highlights of the final round, both good and bad, however Oakmont appeared to be the talk of the weekend and I am not sure the course should be center stage of any Major, however the media chose this issue as their main theme.

Some other highlights of the final day include Jim Furyk’s 66 – low score of the final round. Scott Piercy finishing tied for second. In case you were unaware, Scott was ranked 264th in the world before the 2016 US Open. Good think the world rankings are accurate! Another shout out goes to Jason Dufner. He shot an even par 70 on the last day and moved up the standings by 4 positions – this only happens at the US Open!

What little I watched of the US Open, my impression was that the course was tough, the players fought hard and the comments by players reminded me of last year’s US Open at Chamber’s Bay. The course was ridiculously difficult with crazy fast greens. So basically not much changed!

The US Open is the most challenging golf tournament on the professional circuit. Regardless of the course, it seems that there are those who have nothing good to say and others who try and rise to the challenge. I am a bit disappointed for Shane Lowry and Lee Westwood; the last round of the 201 US Open was not there best day. However, I applaud their stick-to-it-ness (is that a real word!). It was tough to watch and I bet more difficult to experience.

Finally, congratulations Kirk Bland, Zeb Welborn, and Craig Cassells for picking Dustin Johnson as the 2016 US Open Champion. I bow to their wisdom and foresight! They are now leading the race on The Grateful Golfer Predictions page! Thanks to everyone who continues to participate in our fun game.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
