Focused On The Wrong Thing In Golf

Have you ever thought that you are focusing on the wrong aspect of your golf game? I sure have over the years and to my demise. Yup, every player has on occasion travelled down the wrong path searching for the magic to lower our golf scores. I have found something that worked very well for me and has served my golfing needs for a long time. It deals less a particular stroke or technique, but a philosophy of lowering my golf scores in a consistent manner. I have mentioned it before, but I figure it is worth talking about because it will work for every player.

Not Following Through With Your Golf Resolution

I purposely wait for some time before talking about our 2023 golf resolutions. The reason for my delay is to give everyone a chance to re-evaluate their golf resolutions because if they are like all my resolutions in the past, they are broken by now. 🙂 I do not make resolutions because I believe that taking steps to improve my daily life and golf game is a year long process that requires constant attention. Maybe attention is the wrong word and focus or intent. Making a statement of finality that requires immediate action seems like a great idea, but I have rarely been successful making resolutions; golf or otherwise. To take this one step further, I do not make golf resolutions, I make golf plans and try execute it as best possible.

What I The Toughest Part Of Golf?

Golf is a tough game! Anyone who has devoted any amount of time to playing this awesomely frustrating sport knows that at any time great or disastrous things can happen. It is because we have any control over some events even though we think the opposite. I cannot remember the number of times that my round has change significantly (good or poor) for the swing of one club. The mental challenges to the unknown results does force many players into a tailspin. But not me, I have decided (actually years ago) not to focus on the short game, but to say focused on the long term results of improving my game.

Competing In Golf Tournaments

Golf tournaments show what kind of golfer your are and could be. The pressure of playing in a competition will accentuate our strengths and more importantly or weaknesses of our game. The area that I notice the most challenge for amateur golfers competing is on the mental side of the game. They are more concerned with what other players are doing, that they let it overshadow their game. For full disclosure, I have fell into this trap in my early years. As I mature as a player and developed my game, I found that what other players were doing was less a factor as what I am doing on the course. I am not sure there is a simple solution to the mental challenge of ignoring what other players are doing, but I seem to have know I turned the corner to success many years ago.

Hitting Long Drives

After reading and researching on how to hit long drives, I have come to the conclusion that there is no set standard. Each player has a slightly different swing and this causes challenges to come up with a definitive way to hit long drives. I realize that there is a foundation for the proper swing and I think I found a video that offers a step by step process for hitting the long ball. When I watched it, I felt that as a single digit handicapper it fit my swing more than most, so I thought it was worth talking about.
