Golf is a mental game of confidence. It is a sport where the slightest thing can throw you off your game! The six inches of real estate between your ears is either your greatest friend or your worst nightmare.
I do not have any pearls of wisdom today, but I am looking for help! I am looking for the your top mental tip. I was thinking of sharing them with everyone, but I am really stumped today. So, I need some inspiration and you can provide it!
So I reach out to you, let me know your best tip or advice on how to keep, grow, or expand your confidence when making a golf shot! I will be forever grateful!
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
Hi Jim. My thought is ‘trust it’. Selecting a shot and committing to it with confidence can only help ensure its success. It’s a great game and teaches us so much. Thanks, Mike

Mike,
I agree that ‘trust it’ is the way to go, however if my confidence is shot already, it is difficult to trust anything. I will keep your suggestion in mind for sure. Thanks.

Aloha Jim,
Maybe this is a tip or maybe not. After every bad shot I always tell myself, “Only let it cost you one stroke, hit a high percentage shot and get back in the game.” I don’t always do it, but I always tell myself that.

Wayne,
That is a solid confidence and course management tip for us all. Taking our medicine is ok, compounding the mistake is not wise golf. Thanks for the reminder!

I think the best advice is to just let go! Visualize how you want the shot to go, trust that you have the skills to pull it off, then step up and let it happen. The millisecond the ball comes off the club, be accepting of whatever happens. If you miss the fairway off the tee, get excited about the challenge to recover, if you miss the green, get excited about the challenge to hit a close chip and get up and down And if you miss a putt, accept it and move on to the next and refocus. I think as golfers it’s hard for us to stay in the present, to stay focused only on the next shot in front of us. To various degree we are always thinking about our missed shot or putt some holes ago that is going to cost us in the end. So the best advice I think is to simply focus only on the next shot, the present moment, and understand that one or several bad shots or holes in a row doesn’t mean you can’t play your best golf ever the very next stretch. One shot at a time Jim!

That is great advice. Staying in the moment is something I have worked on for years, but I have to admit it is difficult sometimes. Maybe my expectations are too high some days, but fire and forget (for bad shots) is something to work on for sure. Thank you.

Jim – Golf is mental….I totally agree 😉
Having a small and specific target on each shot helps me, particularly when I can find something beyond the green, like the top of a tree behind the green. I try to think about that target and only that target. It helps me make a smooth swing as if I were on the driving range if I convince myself that the target is the only thing that matters, as opposed to everything between me and the hole which could get me in trouble!

Josh,
Great point! Focusing on something specific and narrow might be good for my game. I generally focus in a direction or something specific, but not something overly refined. Thanks.

Jim, my favorite is, “Take dead aim. ” It is very easy to slip into mechanical thoughts over the ball and forget we are playing a target oriented game!
Thanks

Brian,
Very good point. When I loose my confidence I have a tendency to do just that. Thanks for the tip!
