The Open: Final Thoughts

Jack N and Tom W

From Jack Nicklaus’ Facebook page

Wow! What a final round! Many of the pundits have listed the final round of The Open between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson as one of the greatest final rounds in any Major. It is always hard to make such a statement, but if you are suggesting such bold thoughts, I am confident that Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods’ final rounds would be contenders for comparison.

Unfortunately, I only saw glimpses of the round, but social media was afire with comments and thoughts. Phil Mickelson shot a -6 and lost by 3 strokes to the winner, Henrik Stenson, who shot a -8. Both were amazing performances and Mickelson can walk with his head held high because he was defeated by a better player in the final round. Reviewing the final round, I look for expert opinions, who I respect, to sum up their thoughts and I found one I can wholeheartedly support!

Jack Nicklaus summation of the final round of The Open is worth repeating. I received (as thousands did) Jack’s statement via Facebook and here is what he said:

I was fortunate to watch every second of today’s final round of the Open Championship, and I thought it was fantastic. Phil Mickelson played one of the best rounds I have ever seen played in the Open and Henrik Stenson just played better—he played one of the greatest rounds I have ever seen. Phil certainly has nothing to be ashamed of because he played wonderfully. Henrik played well from beginning to end. He drove the ball well; his iron game was great; his short game was wonderful; and his putting was great. Henrik was simply terrific. To win your first major championship is something special in and of itself, but to do it in the fashion Henrik did it in, makes for something very special and incredibly memorable. I’m proud of and happy for Henrik. Some in the media have already tried to compare today’s final round to 1977 at Turnberry, with Tom Watson and me in what they called the “duel in the sun.” I thought we played great and had a wonderful match. On that day, Tom got me, 65-66. Our final round was really good, but theirs was even better. What a great match today.

The greatest player of all time suggests the match between Stenson and Mickelson was possibly the greatest ever. I tend to agree, but in reality, the biggest winners were the golfing fans who had the opportunity to watch these titans battle for the entire round. Thanks Henrik and Phil for a fantastic show!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. It was a fantastic round and great duel. Henrik 3-putted twice and still won. But he 1-putted a whole of times. Impressive by both players. Congratulation to Henrik Stenson on a great victory. Hats off to Phil for a great run. I thought he was going to pull it off especially with they way hole 1 went. Next up our National Championship – RBC Canadian Open. 🇨🇦⛳️
