Fall Golf is Here!

Every year, about this time, the sunny warm days of golf are quickly turning to cooler days of fall. Each year, I ask questions about clothing, equipment, and tricks to keep warm and extend our golfing season. Additionally, I am heading to a 54 hole tournament next week and the weather forecast is varied and as such the proper clothing is critical so I can play my best. 

This year, I asked the same question as in previous years. However, I realize the responses are different and I am in dire need of outer wear that others seem to deem critical to fall golf.

I have a warm sweat shirt, wet weather gear, and underwear, but I do not have a decent pull over. For some reason, I have not taken the time to purchase this vital piece of kit. So now it must be time. As I ponder my selection and perform the required research, it dawned on me that I have a ready-made group of awesome golfers who can help.

Yes, you are it! So I am asking for your help. Do you wear an outer garment? If so, is it any good for cooler temperatures? What is the make? Do you have anything else you want to share about your pullover?

    My strategy for fall golf when the weather is unpredictable is all about layers. As you know I’ve been an ambassador for Peak Performance the past couple of seasons so I may be a bit biased, but they’ve sent me some great stuff – vests, v-neck sweaters, zip up sweaters, long sleeve base layers, and a good rain shell. Typically I count on the “soft” layers for warmth, and use the rain shell to protect from wind or rain as needed. I think a really good, light weight waterproof shell (gortex or similar) is vital, and it’s all about layering appropriately underneath. The Peak stuff is great, but also doesn’t come cheap.

  2. I’ve got a few pullovers, two of which I really like from Footjoy. They are both wind proof, semi waterproof, an cut well to allow me freedom of movement (which I find critical – I can’t stand it when something feels like it’s pulling during my swing). One of those combined with a thermal undershirt under my golf shirt if it’s cool enough and the combo handles all but maybe a day or two of any cold weather we get. Maybe one or two days a year I might wear my rain jacket on top of that as well and my fingers get cold easily so I buy a glove for my right hand once a year plus I have a pair of cold weather gloves from an earlier vacation where my timing had me playing while it snowed. They’re probably good for a few more years though. They’ve only been used a couple of times over the past few years.
