Stop the presses! As always at the Ryder Cup, nothing is going as expected. Given the powerhouse line up of Team USA, the results of Day One has caught the golfing world by surprise…..or has it?
Leading 5 to 3 after the first days action, I think Team USA did not expected the roles to be reversed. However, I conducted a poll just a few days ago and the masses, at least for the first day, called it right.
Like many others, I am not panicking about the results for Day One. The afternoon matches were a complete bust for Team USA and that is what really surprised me; how completely dominating Team Europe was during the Foursomes.
Thomas Bjorn had it right. I paired the right players together and as a result their chemistry steamrolled Team USA. At this time Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood are the team to beat. Bjorn is riding the winning team and has paired them together for the morning matches against Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed. This rematch of yesterday morning should be interesting, and I predict that, unfortunately for Team USA, the results will be the same.
Jim Furyk is going with the exact lineup as the yesterday morning. I am not surprised because he needs to stop the bleeding and he is going with his winning team. I am not sure this strategy is best, but I am not going to second guess Furyk. He has a tough job and the last thing he needs is armchair golfers giving unwanted advice.
Looking over the lineup, I think the pairing to watch is Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm. These two fiery players have the potential to overwhelm Thomas and Spieth on pure emotion. They will have to play extremely well to beat Team USA’s strongest pairing, but their chemistry could that secret ingredient that registers another point for Team Europe.
It is too early to suggest that Team Europe is on the cusp of victory; but if they walk away for 4 points this morning, I am not sure Team USA can recover. It is going to be exciting to watch the Ryder Cup action this morning to see if Team USA can live up to the pre-tournament hype!
How do you see the action going today?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
