Tiger Woods – Still a Superstar?

First, congratulations to Tiger Woods for matching Sam Snead’s 82 professional win record. It was a fantastic accomplishment that many players expected (or at least hoped) he would match before he hung up the sticks. Given his resurgence to the top of the leaderboard, he will likely exceed this feat in the next year or two. However, I was wondering if his continued winning ways garners the status as Superstar as it once did? Does Tiger Woods outshine the young stars or professional golf?

Woods’ latest win at THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP definitely has changed the records book. It appears that a tremendous amount of discussion on my social media about this milestone points towards Tiger Woods ability to capture the attention of the golfing world. However, unlike in the early 2000s, does this attention translate into a financial gain for the golf industry. I do not know the answer, but in reality that is the only figure that really counts. Golf is business at that level and any professional involved in golf knows this.

There was an interesting article on PGATour.com about numbers and comparison of wins, loses, etc. if you are interested. Here is the link.

I conducted my own poll and here is what you said about Tiger Woods’ win:

By just using pure numbers, Tiger Woods still has star power as 68% of the respondents care that he tied Sam Snead’s recorded. I realize that my sample group is skewed because anyone taking the time to answer are likely avid golfers. However, that was my target group because they would be the only ones following Woods’ historic run.

Back to the question at hand: is Tiger Woods still a superstar? On the surface, I would say yes. At 43 years old, he is still at the top of list of players to go watch at a professional golf tournament. But, is there a financial gain to Tiger continuing to win?

That answer to that question is a great big YES! Without boring you with all the numbers (which you can read for yourself if your are interested), Tiger Woods is still one of the biggest draws in golf. Everything increases when he is in the hunt at a professional golf tournament. When he won The Masters last year, the numbers are staggering as to the impact he made on viewership and product sales. Tiger Woods is still one of the biggest draws in golf.

I applaud Tiger on his persistence to keep playing considering all his physical woes. I have never been his biggest fan, but I do respect his ability to shape professional golf. He is a true champion and I congratulate him on his continue success! Tiger Woods is still a superstar!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
