Playing Golf With Your Dad or Mom

Watching the practice round of Tiger Woods and his son Charlie at the 2020 PNC Championship sure brings back some fond memories. In my early years I had the honour of playing golf with my Dad, but alas we never had the opportunity to play in a tournament. That was reserved from my Mom about 10 years later. Whether in competition or playing in a friendly, I can say that those rounds were priceless!

Here is a slow motion video of Tiger and Charlie playing their practice round on Thursday:

I was taken aback by how similar their mannerisms were; I realize they are father and son, but my goodness. I am not sure how they will fair in this weekend, but the thrill of playing together provides a memory for both of them they will cherish for a lifetime.

I can say that without question, playing golf with one or both my parents is something I miss. They provide insight to golf and life that we sometimes do not hear off the course. Additionally, is fun to watch them laugh and joke around. The entire experience, for me anyways, was a great time.

Golf is a sport that has the opportunity to span time and allow any level of athlete the opportunity to enjoy the company of their family. Golf is truly a contact sport…..just ask Tiger and Charlie.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. My parents didn’t play golf. However, I got my son involved at an early age and play with him regularly. He has a physical disability which limits the use of his right arm and left leg. That said, he loves golf and plays to a mid 20s handicap index. About 5 years ago we played in a 27 hole tournament as a 2 man team (better ball, scramble, & alternate shot – 9 holes each). In our flight, we placed 2nd overall and placed 1st in the alternate shot segment. I’ve played competitive golf for 60 years and this was the number one highlight by far!

  2. The lad has game and I’m sure he and Tiger will enjoy the experience. I’m fortunate to have played golf with my Mom and Dad, she’s gotten into the game a little more over the past 5-10 years. Plays they have a relaxed 18 hole par 3 course just down the road. Great memories which I’ll always have. And some fun pics! Great topic! It’ll be fun to see the Woods’ and other pairings enjoy unique family time! Cheers, Mike

  3. Jim, I routinely would play with my Dad while growing up and through my 30s. He’s 92 now and uses a walker and obviously doesn’t play any more. But a year or two ago, he rode along with me for 18 holes at the golf course in his development, which was great fun. While warming up on the range, I let him hit a few balls with my 8-iron and you could see the delight in his eyes. He’s a very analytical type, a physicist by trade, and was actually trying to pick apart the mechanics for his little half swing shots. How hilarious!

Dad usually shot in the 90s. One of the best memories I have is when he broke 80 for the one and only time in his life. I’ve never seen anyone so happy after a round of golf.

Glad to hear you got to play with both your parents. You must have many memories to cherish.

    Thanks,

    Brian

Thanks for sharing your story. I do miss playing with my parents, but hopefully, I will be able to share my experiences with others. For now, I am the only golfer in my family…..it might change in the future, but we shall see.

      Cheers Jim

  4. It’s absolutely sickening what I see in that video. After playing for decades to watch some little kid who hasn’t even been alive that long come out with a FAR better swing than mine is enough to make me vomit. 🤣

What a swing that little guy has. Dad’s got to be proud. I’ve missed the broadcasts of any of it so far but I’m sure I’ll get to see some this weekend.

I’ve still not made it to the range since I got the new short 3 hybrid. But I hit it really well a few times today. I’ve now got it going at least as long as the 3 iron and maybe more off the deck. I think it may just be a real weapon out there for me before too long. But tomorrow I’m hitting the range for sure. The things I’ve been working on are gelling but I need to burn it in until it’s second nature and nothing beats the range for that.
