Playing Two Balls And Learning Lessons

I have recently decided to play two balls as I loop my new nine hole course. I realize it is not the same as playing a full 18 holes, but for now it works for what I am trying to achieve. Right now I am balancing the time I spend on the links with the mountain of yard work that I want to complete. I use two different makes of golf balls and hit which ever is farthest from the green. I keep the different scores and track my shots. I have found out a couple things and have made some changes that is helping me evaluate my game and hopefully take it to the next level.

Here is what is happening. I hit the same distance with each club. I hit my driver to within 10 yards 8 times out of ten. I hit my 3 wood almost the same distance every time and my approach use the same club. As you can see, hitting the same club to the same distance does not really help my game much. I already know this information, so I was thinking how to can make it more of an advantage to my game.

I decided to mix things up. I decided to hit my 3 hybrid instead of a 3 wood. I worked at shaping the ball more and clubbing down on approach shots. I know I talked about the last shot making technique before and decided to use it with earnest. I am also hitting a variety of clubs when chipping around the green and found that my beloved 7 iron will not work well on my new course. By changing my traditional club selection I am working my game with surprising results. Now, when hitting two balls, I am forcing myself into unique/different shots that break from my traditional approach to playing. And I am all for the better…..I think.

I will have to continue working on my new approach to playing golf at Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort. It is a work in progress, but I think I am finding my way forward. More to follow.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim, love it. What a great way to play when you’re by yourself. You can try so many different formats and learn so much. On occasion I can pull this off at my local exec course but it’s hard to get out as a single. I’ve found the best time to do this is right after it’s rained or is cloudy and kind of drizzling. Keeps the masses at home. I guess your new course isn’t that crowded?

    Thanks,

    Brian

    • Brain,

My new course is not crowded at all. I basically can go whenever and get on. If I cannot, I will practice or just go home. The benefits of living only 10 minutes away. I am liking my new practice routine. I do not count my scores for anything, but that is okay it is all about having fun.

      Cheers Jim

  2. Played some pretty solid golf today. Stayed under par for the 1st time in a few weeks I think. The swing changes are starting to gel. And the 100 lob wedges I hit yesterday paid off with a chip in eagle on #2 and a couple more that got really close to falling with one of those being for eagle as well.

The driver is flying farther. I almost ran off the back on a green I couldn’t reach last year at all. And got closer to another than I have in the 2 years I’ve been here. The irons are a little farther but also higher. That still needs to get fixed, but I don’t want to do too much at once. I’ll work on trajectory after I feel more like what I’m doing is normal. I have some time before storm season and the big winds that brings.

Rain is coming tomorrow so I’ll try and squeeze in more range time as I’m pretty sure we won’t be playing in the evening tomorrow. Gotta do what I can to keep working on things now that progress is being made.
