Day One At The 2923 Masters

The first day at the Masters was exciting. With 44 players sitting at even or better (just over half), moving day is shaping up to be exciting. Three players shot minus 7 to lead the field as I expected. Hovland, Rahm and Koepka’s score is two lower than I thought, they did establish themselves as the players to beat. Now that Friday is here, Augusta National will start to rear its toughness expected by many during the first round. However, the playing conditions were perfect and 44 players refused to bow to the pressure. So what is instore for Moving Day at this year’s Masters? Can the players respond with the same scoring now that the weather is starting to roll in?

In case you missed it, here is coverage of the Honorary Starters. This is one of my favourite traditions at the Masters:

The round of golf that caught my attention the most was by Jon Rahm. He is tied for the lead at 7 under, but what was exciting was that he started the day with a 4 putt double bogey. Talk about a reversal of fortunes. Rahm, and others, were dialed in as they went pin hunting all day. I am confident that day two will be different with still warm weathers, but rain definitely in the forecast.

The weather for Moving Day is going to be more of a problem for later tee times. Around 1 pm, the rain will start. There for the players getting out early, such as Scottie Scheffler at 10:00, Rory McIlroy at 10:12 and Jordan Spieth at 10:24, will likely take of the good scoring conditions.

Unfortunately, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Victor Havland will have to contend with wet, rainy conditions. It will likely affect their score, but one never knows.

The player with the best two day tee times is Brooks Koepka. His second day tee time is early (8:18) and the playing conditions at that time might help him widen his lead. I know I am talking about the weather more than normal, but this year it is a huge factor over the short space of The Masters.

Regardless of who you are cheering for, it is going to be another fantastic day of golf. With the tee times moved up 30 minutes, the action is about to start.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim, I watched Full Swing episode #2 on Netflix and thought Koepka was going to shoot an 80 on one of the first two days. Boy was I wrong. He has got things turned around in a big way. Rory disappointed again and always seems to start slowly and then make a charge. Got a lot of guys to pass this time. We’ll see!

    • Brian,

Koepka looks very hard to beat. The weather today will not help players like Rahm close the gap, but we shall see. Tomorrow is forecast to be dry and cool. Let’s see what happens today.

      Cheers Jim
