Par 3 Challenges Fixed With One Thought

Every golf course has holes that are easy and others that challenge even the best golf game. Playing many rounds of golf over the years, par 3s have always been a bug bear to my game. If I birdie one or two per round, then I knew great things were going to happen. My goal is to shot par at worst, but that did not always work out. As time progressed, I realized my strategy on par 3s needed to change and surprisingly, it worked!

I could describe my current strategy, but I figure I would let Mark Crossfield do it for me:

Yup, aiming for the center of the green on par 3s is the key to shooting lower golf scores. The trick is being able to hit to distance. It is important to understand how far we hit our irons in order to avoid all hazards. This strategy is not difficult, but very important for most amateurs to play their best on short holes. Thoughts?

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Generally I will have a good idea as to where my misses are heading on a given day and can add that info to my decision making when choosing a target.

Distance from the pin will also play a part in where I choose to aim be it a par 3 or an approach from the fairway.

And what I think is most important in choosing the target line is being specific. I won’t aim at the middle of the green. I’ll aim for a specific spot in the middle of the green. Without a specific point to target, I’m more likely to miss everything.

I’d far rather aim at the pin than just the middle for that reason. The pin is specific and the middle isn’t.

The same goes when chipping. Aim to hit a target landing spot every time. Right or wrong you’re more likely to hit a good chip than when you allow yourself to be vague on the details.
