A new challenge in my game has arisen. Over the past few rounds I started pulling my irons left. This anomaly is starting to cause me fits because my expectation is to hit the ball where I am without having to adjust my setup to aim right. I think I know what the problem, however I will have to experiment the next time I hit the links. As we do not have a driving range close to my home, I will have to take the time on the course to figure out what is happening. Unfortunately, this process is what is available to me right now and it does challenge my ability to fix swing issues.
I have narrowed down my issue to two things. Either I am playing the ball too far forward in my stance or my clubface is close on setup and impact. These are the first to challenges and I am going to see if my clubface is close first because I think it will be the simplest issue to fix. How you may ask, well that is a great question.

I am going to use alignment sticks. I understand that my round will not count when I use this training aid, but it is the only way I know how to fix my potential issue. I have used alignment sticks in the past to help with all facets of my game with great success. I believe this inexpensive aide is the best resource for golfers to fix theirs swing. They provide immediate feedback which can be addressed at that moment. If you do not have a set of alignment sticks, I recommend you get some and use them in all areas of your game.
The second issue, if the above fix is not the solution, is go adjust where the ball is located in my stance. To fix this challenge I will use alignment sticks as well. I can set the sticks up on my heels and have it point to where the ball is located in my stance. Again, an easy visual tool that provides immediate feedback. I have adjusted the with of my stance lately (making it slightly narrower), so the location of my ball might be the obvious challenge as well as a closed club face.
All golfers face challenges in their game during the course of the season. Mine, at this time, is consistently pulling the ball left with my shorter irons. It is time to address this challenge because it is not going away. After about five rounds of frustration, now is the time to address my woes. More to follow on the solution.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
I don’t usually try and fix things like that on the course. But there are a couple things that I know I do that lead to it sometimes. One is not tucking the trail side elbow properly. That gets me closing the face early or something. The other is ball placement in my stance. I will move closer to the ball to solve that and maybe move it back a bit too if I’m really pulling it. That will at least help me swing out which will help move the flight the other direction at least to start off.

Kevin,
Due to the lack of practice facilities in my area, fixing my swing on the golf course is my only recourse. Such is life in northern Ontario in bush country.

Jim, could be anything. I’d consider the narrow stance change. While allowing you to make a fuller turn, it may promote a lateral slide on the downswing. Good luck in your efforts!

Brian,
Thanks very much. I think tempo combined with a narrower stance has something to do with this as well, but I have to start somewhere.
