If I Only Knew This Sooner

Golf is an amazing sport that offers many opportunities for success. Equally, the negative side of golf can be just as aggressive when fighting for your attention. For years, I walked the path of trying to be a scratch golfer, but alas I have given up that goal. Mostly because I am not willing to put in the time or effort (at this time) to cross the finish line. During my journey, I realized one thing that was consistent every time I reached a milestone. This one trait of all athletes is what helps everyone reach their goals.

The foundation to understanding about success started at an early age. Through my trial and error phase of my young life I realized that never stopping pursuing my goals is a mindset. I had (have) to be willing to fail many times to reach my destination. It was all about getting up one more time than falling down. Of course this tenacity applies to all parts of our lives, but when developing my golf game it was even more important.

I have tried many different golf techniques and every time I made changes, I made the conscious decision to not stop trying. Sometimes my scores soared, but eventually I was able to use my new technique for the betterment of my golf game.

Knowing that making mistakes and adjusting is apart of my golf journey, it is easy to stay focused on my end state. Interestingly, I have stopped some techniques because it did not feel like it was going to help my overall game, but that decision as made through focused analysis. Changes to my golf game is a give and take, but as I tried to improve things I realized that my best successes occurred when I got up that 8th time.

There is no magical solution to success in golf or life. It is a matter of persistence of getting up one more time than failing. My greatest successes were engrossed in exactly that. And now, as I continue on my golf journey, it is easy to apply this process to my game. Whether I want to make changes or not is yet to be determined. If I do, I know what I need to do.

These flowers were growing in the middle of a dead thicket! Talk about persistence!

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim, an alternative would be to just enjoy the game and make improvement your goal( versus becoming a scratch golfer). I will bet that, since you are so close to being scratch, you will become a scratch golfer as an outcome of simple enjoyment and improvement. No pressure. I am grateful for your daily post and wish you and yours the best for the holiday season!
