Five Golf Fundamentals For Seniors

Golf is made easy if we develop strong fundamentals. I guess that is the same for any sport, but for new players (especially seniors) developing the proper fundamentals goes a long way to lowering our golf scores. If your golf journey is just beginning or you want a refresher, then the five fundamentals presented here to day are key to enjoying this great sport.

There is no magic solution or secret tip for playing great golf. Success is rooted in developing strong fundamentals that include your grip, stance, body/ball position, weight shift and follow through or finish. I realize I just listed the core attributes to a great golf swing, but I had to state the obvious. Here is a quick overview of the five fundamentals for seniors and new players.

The fundamental often overlooked, in my humble opinion, is the follow through. My follow through is key because it forces the other aspects of the five fundamentals to be in sync. When I am playing my best golf, my follow through is effortless and exact. The thought process I keep in mind is to point my belly button at the target and to finish high. These two mental notes help my body complete the other basic movements of a strong follow through. Just to clear up an important point, the follow through is not only where the club finishes. It really is a whole body movement.

The five fundamentals for playing great golf are not developed overnight. Each player needs to adopt each of the key points to fit their game. We are not all physically created equal and as such, unique modifications to fit our swing are required. This modification process is best performed on the range. Do not be afraid to experiment because your swing motion is unique as a snowflake. Regardless of how you get there, developing the five fundamentals of a golf swing is worth the effort spent on the journey.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. I do love hearing pros tell me that it’s okay to use a strong grip. A strong grip and a (very) slightly open face at setup has me feeling ready to rip one. 🏌️

Found a new trick recently. I watched a video showcasing Freddy Couples and tried to mimic his stance one day for fun. Cost me a couple of skins but I found out I hit my 6 hybrid a lot better for some reason with that stance. It’s the only club I found that true for but it’s actually been very helpful.

My big miss was a dead push right with it. Couldn’t figure it out. Now it’s more a pull but not as bad and the rights are only when the tall draw flattens out early. So smaller window of error and if now to both sides still less frequent and hazard prone.

Got my first eagles with the new putter along will 36 and counting lipouts. 😂

Both from inside ten feet by a foot or two. Missed ending, eagle-eagle for the first time by an almost lipout on 18 from about 25 feet. Sounds better than it is. Neither hole is 200 yards. The holes would be medium to long par 3s on any real course so I feel guilty calling them eagle with no explanation. Still proud of two tough par 3 birds though.😂 And especially with the progress with the putter. Considering we’re playing playing at sunset when the grain is toughest I’m seeing things I wanted. More misses high than low for instance. That’s expected because of the heavier weight to my thinking. And the alignment is so much more confidence inspiring than the single dot on my old putter. It’s a good combination. And seeing some start to fall bodes well.
