Golf is a sport that can create challenges on every swing. Or it can be so easy that you wonder why people struggle shooting low scores. Over the years, i have talked about course management, club selection, and distance control in order to play our best golf. Well, I finally found a visual aid that will help us put all of our swing thoughts together. The topic deals with the 80% rule on shot selection. This course management strategy will work for every level of golfer and offers many strategy topics into on concise video. The 80% rule makes complete sense and is something that all aspiring (and experienced) players should consider.
Jess Ratcliffe plays three holes using the 80% rule. Playing a par 5, 4 and 3 Jess talks about club selection and why selecting clubs to attain the 80% rule is a great way to maneuver around the links. I like what the process brings to our games and is worth experimenting with next season.
To be fair, the 80% rule is something we talked about in various articles. Course management is a topic that is important for many players because it does save strokes. Additionally, the process of playing more focused golf by using the 80% rule will lower changes of missing a shot or at least lessen the damage caused by missed shots. After watching the video, I think this process is something many mid handicappers could use to reach the next level in their game.
Always hitting the long ball off the tee or pin hunting all the time may not be the best approach to lower golf scores. It is fun to play golf that way, but if you are working on your game and want to be competitive in tournaments then trying the 80% might be for you. This is just another tool we golfers can use to improve our golf game.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
What a great video, and all the better for being presented by a player, not a pro. We’ve all tried, and usually failed, to follow the 80% rule or something similar, so this video is a really good prompt to try harder!

You are right, Rob. We need to try a bit harder and stick to it longer. The first failure does make the process a poor one.
