Missing The Golf Ball During A Golf Swing

I cannot remember the last time I whiffed a golf shot, but I am confident it has happened over the past 45+ years. It is not something that happens often with any of my playing partners, but it definitely has occurred through the years. There are many possibilities as to why a golfer misses the ball and most likely the root error is in their swing. Having said that, there is something that does contribute to whiffing the ball that most amateurs overlook: anxiety.

Anxiety can definitely contribute to missing the golf ball during a swing. With many people watching or someone trying too hard or thinking too much or poor mechanics….etc are all compounded by anxiety of failure. This is nothing new and I have felt this myself a few times in my career. Before I tell you a story about my anxiety mishap, here is a good video talking about how anxiety can affect your golf swing.

Many years ago, when I was playing some of my best golf, I was at a regional tournament for the military. I had won the captaincy of my team over my mentor and I was the first player selected to hit first on the first tee on the first day. Yup, all 60+ players were watching me hit the first ball off the tee.

I actually did not want this honour, but it was thrust upon me anyway. As I walked up to the tee, my anxiety started to build. I set my ball on my tee and went through my pre-shot routine. Being so nervous, I rushed my process in order to get out of the limelight. Standing over the ball, I remember not being able to even see that little white sphere. Instead of backing away, I tried to hit the ball anyway.

This poor decision lead to me topping the ball about 50 yards down the fairway. Not a great way to start and I am sure I heard a few chuckles in the crowd. I realize that this is not whiffing the ball, but everything leading up to contact demonstrates that anxiety is a thing for athletes including golfers.

On a side note, I parred the first hole after sinking a 65 foot putt. My nerves immediately left after holing out and went on to finish third in the 54 hole tournament. Not bad considering the disastrous start.

Whiffing the ball happens in golf. An many players my discount anxiety as a factor, but I suggest you do not. Being nervous, especially as a beginner, is natural. And the only advice I can offer is to ensure you have a solid pre-shot routine and rely on it to get you through the anxious moments. It is a proven fix and one I highly recommend.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
