Hitting The Ball Properly On The Clubface

The science to hitting a golf ball has not changed in many years. The discussion on how we hit the ball may vary from time to time, but the actual science behind the kinetic action remains stalwart. The challenge for most amateurs is converting the knowledge of ball striking into consistent successful actions. This particular point is on that many players need to refine regardless of our skill level. There is on point though that is often overlooked. The advice offered by experts is only the 80% solution. We still need to put in some range time to actually determine the ball position, stance position, contact points, etc. It is not as daunting as stated, but does need some attention.

Checking My ball position with a mid iron.

One of the most overlooked training aid is alignment sticks. I believe that this simple to tool will help simplify our process of determining ball position with respect body position and contact point. I use alignment sticks regularly in order to stay on top of the fundamental skill of knowing where to play the ball with each club. I even use alignment sticks in the offseason in my garage, but I prefer to use them on the range in the spring.

I found a quick video that talks about this topic further. I like that he mentions alignment sticks and how to use them.

Hitting the ball properly on any clubface can be broken down to ball position. I would suggest that this skill is different for each player because of body types, swing styles, weight distribution, etc. There is no one position for each club. This knowledge must be developed by each player for their unique game. So, the next time you hit the range, take a set of alignment sticks with you and see what you can discover.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Another useful thing to do with an alignment stick is to push one into the ground angled to place the free end just outside the outside edge of your trail leg or hip to give you feedback to combat swaying. The main thing that causes us amateurs inconsistent strikes.
