There are so many tips to improve our golf swing it is hard to pick just one. The suggestions here at the Grateful Golfer is designed to offer help to amateurs hoping to improve their game. I am under no illusion that every tip will work for everyone, but I am hoping that the odd tip will help someone at least once. Today’s advice is a combination of pre-shot routine, relieving tension and improving your back swing in under a minute. Sounds too good to be true…..right? Well, maybe not!
The tip today comes from Sam Snead who was talking to Ben Hogan. It is simple, easy and covers so many topics that I will focus on the three mentioned. First, the video:
The first step he talks about is Bobby Jones pre-shot routine. It was always the same and methodical. This is exactly what a pre-shot routine should be like……always the same. What I like about what Snead said was that Jones did this simple movement for every shot.
The second tip is the movement of his chin towards his trail shoulder. This movement, according to Snead was to relieve tension in his shoulders and neck. This makes a great deal of sense because of the movement of our backswing. By allowing our upper body to relax, we likely would have a fuller swing.
The last tip works in conjunction with the chin movement. It allowed Jones to lengthen his backswing. This movement would increase club head speed and power. I have not tried this chin movement, but I think I will give it a try in the spring. I may not gain much, if anything, but it is worth a try.
Finding nuggets to improve our golf swing is never an easy venture. I keep researching and looking for cool, easy tips that might help my game. If I do, I figure they are worth sharing in the hopes it helps others.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
