How To Properly Drop A Golf Ball

Many times golfers just toss their golf ball into a general relief area and carry on with their round. When playing a friendly, I am less concerned about this than when playing in a tournament. A competition is a different beast and there are more rules to consider when taking relief and placing another ball in play. It is not complicated, however there are three rules that constitute a golf ball being dropped properly. The penalty for breaching these rules range from a free redrop, a 1 stroke penalty or a 2 stroke penalty. So, understanding how to properly drop a golf ball is important to your score.

I could go through all the details about how to properly drop a golf ball, but I figure a video is the fastest and easiest method to pass on this knowledge. Pay attention to where the ball finishes after the drop as this seems to be the greatest misconception when dropping a golf ball back into play.

Over the years I played in many golf tournaments. The rules have chance since 2013, but the fact that many golfers do not know how to properly drop a golf ball has not changed. This is a fundamental skill that players need to understand in order to avoid extra penalty strokes. As you can see from the video, dropping a golf ball is not that challenging.

Knowing the rules of golf is important. Dropping a ball properly is a fundamental skill that all players should know and understand. As you continue on your golf journey, trying to understand the fundamental rules of golf is important.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
